I tried six types of Primark PJs to see which are the warmest

Nothing screams having fun more than wearing pajamas and making it completely cozy in the house.

And with temperatures dipping into the minus digits this week, it’s the perfect time to make sure your pajamas keep you warm and toasty.

But how do you know which pajamas are the warmest?

While you might think that something fluffy is much warmer than satin, it’s actually about which fabrics retain heat best, not which ones give off heat.

Primark is a brand where you can choose from hundreds of pajamas, made from different fabrics.

Here, deputy fashion editor Abby McHale has put seven different types of Primark PJs to the test, using the Flir One Edge Pro thermal camera to detect which will keep you warmest this winter.

The purple areas of the thermal camera show the part of the body that retains the most heat.

SATIN:

Don’t ignore satin pajamas if you want to stay warm in winter; they retain more heat than you think.

While on the thermal camera the yellow parts of the body are where you are hottest, this is actually also where the most heat is given off.

In this case, the pajamas allow quite a bit of heat to escape from the top compared to the bottom.

However, after wearing them they were a lot warmer than I initially expected, but a little chilly when you first put them on as they take a while to warm up.

JERSEY:

The jersey material is nice and soft and makes you feel extra comfortable when wearing.

Primark shoppers love thick fleece pajama sets – and they’re so warm that fashion fans are even wearing them outside

One of the thinner fabrics. I was curious to see how much heat this pair would retain.

As you can see from the camera, the legs retain quite a bit of heat and although the top half is lighter, it still shows a deep orange color.

Overall, these were definitely one of the more comfortable pairs worn, but others came out warmer overall.

FLANNEL:

I was pleasantly surprised by these pajamas.

Since I didn’t think flannel would be particularly warm, they retained a lot more heat than I expected.

As you can see from the camera image, there is a lot more purple around the center than some of the others, and almost all of the legs are purple.

While I wouldn’t say these are the comfiest pajamas to wear, they are certainly a great option for those who want a thinner fabric but still want to stay warm.

VELOURS:

Now these red velvet pajamas evoke Christmas, but they were one of the worst fabrics when it came to retaining heat.

As you can see, most of the body is yellow, meaning it wasn’t really retaining heat.

They also felt like the coldest when worn, with the fabric feeling almost shrinking.

You would think they would keep you warmer since they are thicker material than some others tried, but unfortunately these are more for show than warmth.

MICROFLEECE:

Microfleece is the thinnest type of fleece.

When I first put these on they were by far the warmest and felt super cozy and soft, like fleece pajamas should.

In terms of warmth, they did retain some heat, but not more than the other thinner fabrics, which surprised me.

However, compared to regular fleece, microfleece is more of a breathable fabric, so this may be why more heat escapes – nevertheless, they felt very comfortable and warm at the time.

FLEECE:

Primark’s regular fleece version was also very warm and you can see from the thermal camera that it also retained more heat.

Of all the pajamas tried in it, this one definitely retained the most around the waist.

It’s no surprise that it’s the thickest of all the fabrics, but it was still quite light around the top half of the body.

In general, it turned out that the thicker the fabric doesn’t necessarily keep you the warmest.

While fleece will certainly keep you nice and warm if you want thinner pajamas, flannel varieties, for example, do a great job of hugging your body.

Fabulous’ deputy fashion editor on why Primark pajamas are so popular

ABBY McHale reveals why Primark is known for its nightwear department.

Taking over large sections of the stores, it has everything from trendy satin styles to fluffy Disney PJs and everything in between.

Plus, it means you can look good and feel good without having to spend a lot of money.

It’s also a great place to buy a pajama dupe for yourself.

Last year Primark had a great version of the Skims pajamas and the latest dupe is from Victoria’s Secret.

The pink striped pajamas match those of the American lingerie brand, I also have one myself.

They’re lightweight, super comfortable and only a fraction of the price – what’s not to love.
