I tried the viral sponge fence paint trick and I do not recommend it
A DIYer shares her thoughts on a popular 12p trick that will effortlessly spruce up your fence.
With summer in full swing, many green-fingered homeowners are busy tending to their gardens, such as pulling weeds and cleaning their patios.
But if your boring wooden fence really needs some love and attention and you don’t feel like painting it endlessly, there is a trick that many people are enthusiastic about.
The trick is to replace the brush with a sponge, which only costs a few cents.
According to DIYers, this not only saves you time, but it is also mess-free and will not damage your plants and lawn with dripping paint.
But while the trick has taken TikTok and other platforms by storm, it Real so effective?
One woman, known only as Kirsty (@kirstyhome1) recently found out for herself and shared her final verdict.
The homeowner, who regularly posts content about cleaning and the house on the page, first dipped the large yellow sponge in a can of khaki paint before running it over the wooden fence.
But as she soon discovered, this method required multiple layers to achieve the desired look, the video showed.
Kirsty demonstrated the before and after process and said: ”After a few hours and three coats it was taking far too long and the sponge kept tearing on the fence.
“I think the color is beautiful, the olive color fits perfectly with our garden.”
Since there were still many areas that needed a lick of paint, the cleaner said she would not continue with the sponge method and would use an alternative instead.
“We will definitely buy a sprayer, there are too many fences.”
If they stick to the 12p sponge painting, Kirsty joked they’d be ‘done by next summer’.
Dozens of garden enthusiasts responded en masse to the comments on the video, which has been viewed no fewer than 101,000 times so far.
How do you get algae off fences?
ABS Fencing has shared a list of tips and tricks for removing green algae from your fence.
- Do not use household mold removers, as these are generally intended for use on indoor hard surfaces.
- Don’t use bleach in the garden, it kills much more than just mold.
- Do not attempt to sand the top surface of the wood as the algae will simply grow back.
- Do not use a pressure washer as this will only open up the wood grain and allow more water in, making the problem worse over time.
- Add white vinegar mixed with hot water to a spray bottle and work it into the stain with a brush. Let it sit for 30 minutes or more and then spray it clean with the garden hose.
- Once dry, repaint with a good quality fence paint.
Someone advised: “Invest in a spray paint sprayer if you can. They cost about £40 and are great for fences. For a 6ft panel you can spray paint it in two minutes.”
Someone else suggested: “My only advice with the sprayer is to be careful and warn your neighbors.
“Ours broke our furniture (which we could have moved).”
Another commented: “Put on latex gloves and dip the sponge in paint, it works much better.”
“First wet the fence a little, then you try not to let all the pigments penetrate deeper into the fence instead of on the surface,” said one do-it-yourselfer.
You can find sponges in most supermarkets, including Aldi. A pack of six costs 75p, which works out at around 12p per sponge.
