I was 18 when I learned the truth about my sister: she was a giant can of worms
A MAN has revealed how his life was turned upside down after he discovered a stunning family secret he kept hidden for years.
While grieving the loss of his mother, he was confronted with the truth about the “sister” he grew up with.
Reddit user Snarfhard described the family drama in a message on the platform.
“I guess this isn’t the strangest situation ever, but sometimes it feels good to talk about it,” he said.
“I’m now a 36-year-old man with a wife and a toddler, but it still permeates almost every aspect of my family life.
“My ‘sister’ was 16 when she had me and she hid her pregnancy under baggy clothes until it was far too late to have an abortion.”
THE CRUCIAL MOMENT
Snarfhard said he only discovered the truth when the person he thought was his mother died in hospital.
There, at the age of 18, his cousin told him the shocking news.
“[My cousin] suddenly turned to me and said, ‘That’s not your mother, that’s her,’ he said. ‘Pointing [at my sister] all the time.
“I will never forget the look on his face.”
Snarfhard added that his brother-in-law’s strange statements should have been a warning sign.
“It’s always strange looking back,” he said.
“So my ‘sister’ got married and had another child, three years after I was born.
“I would often go on road trips with them to visit her husband’s family. Her husband, my ‘brother-in-law,’ would always say cryptic things like, ‘If you were my son.'”
Another Redditor struggled to understand the situation, wondering how this could happen in the first place.
“But why did they hide that from you?” they wrote.
“I could understand if she was hiding it from your ‘mother’, but if they were both involved, why?
“I don’t want to sound judgmental, but this all sounds incredibly cruel.”
“There’s never a good time to open a big box of worms,” Snarfhard replied.
“Do you do it when things are bad and make it worse? Or do you do it when things are good and potentially make it worse?
“I don’t agree with their decision to hide it from me, but I can understand why it was difficult for them to tell me the truth.”
