I was having trouble paying my rent, but my part-time job paid for my house for a year
A WOMAN shared how her creative side job helped her pay her rent for a year.
Portsmouth-based illustrator Angela Chick sells cards on greeting card marketplace Thortful, with over 85,000 cards sold so far.
Angela explains that the royalties from the sale of her cars have been “a great addition to my money.”
Angela worked as a full-time illustrator and now works in licensing, commissioning, and teaching in higher education, while also working on her creative side job at Thortful.
“I love the flexibility that working with Thortful offers,” she says.
“It’s tough now that there’s so much competition, but it’s great to be able to help people connect when they need it.

“Working and teaching online allows me to set my own schedule and I love that.
“It’s so important to me that I have time to go out and feel inspired.”
Angela explains that she has made mistakes in the past when supplying larger companies, losing out on over £22,000.
However, she claims that moving to Thortful has allowed her to keep a larger share of the profits herself.
“I submit my designs for approval (to the company) and the money flows in,” she says.
“My cards focus on friendship and because many of the cards are about mental health, they were a great way to let people know you were thinking of them during difficult times.
“It has really helped me during the quieter periods in my business and I am so glad I can focus on it more now.
“Now I don’t have to worry about designing all my own products for my store.”
Part-time jobs in figures
An estimated 22.8 million Britons use a side job to supplement their income, according to new research from Finder.
Of those aged 18 to 23, 68 percent will have a part-time job in 2024.
The 24 to 42 age group is not far behind: 65 percent have an additional source of income.
Part-time jobs are less popular among older generations: 40 percent of 43 to 54 year olds have one.
While 23 percent of people between the ages of 55 and 73 earn extra money in this way, and only 7 percent of people aged 74 and older do.
A thortful spokesperson added: “These stories are what make thortful so special and motivate us to continue pushing boundaries and supporting the creative journeys of our creators.
“We wouldn’t be successful without their unique talents and we can’t thank the community enough.”
