I was the original Teletubby baby – I can’t keep my childhood fame a secret, but I try
IF you grew up in the nineties and 00s, you will recognise the iconic Teletubbies Sun Baby.
The yellow-faced toddler appeared in every episode, while the colourful characters Tinky-Winky, Dipsy, Laa Laa and Po played, laughed, danced and sang.
Jess Smith witnessed the iconic baby from 1997 to 2001, when she was just nine months old.
In mid-January, it was announced that the child star had given birth to a baby girl, named Poppy.
And now the mother of one is opening up about her life since she first appeared on the silver screen almost 30 years ago.
“I don’t tell people [that I was the Teletubby baby]”, she revealed on This Morning.
“Everyone I’m with knows, so everyone tells everyone.
“My partner Ricky tells everyone, and his family too, and my family too – everyone tells everyone.
“No matter where I go, everyone knows.”
Jess later revealed that she got the job after being weighed in hospital.
“The producer came by the same day and I had a short audition – and yes, I got the part.”
The mother of one added that if the opportunity arose for little Poppy to be the shining light of the iconic children’s series, she would grab it with both hands.
This Morning presenters Josie Gibson and Craig Doyle even told Jess that she looks the same now as she did when she was a baby.
“You can really tell you were the Teletubby baby because you have such a baby face,” beamed Josie.
“You still haven’t lost your babyface look.
“How beautiful and cute were you?
“That has been shown all over the world.”
Craig added that Jess’ blue eyes were a clear testament to her childhood fame.
In March, Jess revealed her firstborn child’s full name, Poppy, in a nod to her time as a Teletubbies star.
The baby’s adorable nickname is Poppy Rae Latham, a reference to Rae’s lead role.
