Renovating your home can be expensive, but one woman managed to solve this problem and keep unwanted guests off her patio without it costing her a lot of money.

Her improvised renovation not only stayed within budget, but was also completed quickly.

“[I] “I was tired of people using my back patio of my apartment as a place to walk through when there’s like 100 feet of mowed lawn behind me,” Redditor wrote Catcatcatcube.

Catcatcatcubed decided to take matters into her own hands to regain her privacy.

However, fences can be quite expensive and can take a while to build.

She found a solution that fit within the budget and blended in well with the existing environment.

FENCED

She bought some “cheap but large rectangular planters” and repurposed the rest of the items, making it a low-cost home renovation.

“I weighed [the planters] down with heavy rocks [and] “I put in leftover potting soil that would otherwise have gone to waste,” she said.

Catcatcatcubed collected ‘fallen branches’ from her neighborhood and woven them together with rope to create ‘dense thickets’.

Her homemade fence successfully kept strangers off her property. She called it “super fast and effective until you can afford something better.”

Ultimately, she improved the appearance of her outdoor project because it proved effective.

“Later [I] “We could afford dried bamboo poles and real vines, which made it look more functional,” she said.

Catcatcatcubed also shared some tips for a successful job.

For the rectangular planters, she recommended deep ones.

She added a few supplies to keep the homemade fence from falling over.

She suggested putting rebar in the holes in the planter and “small, heavy rocks.”

“Or use the planters to build a ‘fence’ (think British willow fence),” she added.

She shared another way to use the planters.

“Put down some of those faux hedge mats that you can tie to a frame (remember, some trellis structures span two planters),” she added.

However, her DIY privacy solution had one drawback.

“The planters add height, but they also kill the grass,” she said.

She added that some homeowners associations may not approve, but she advised looking at what other neighbors are doing with their outdoor spaces.
