I wrapped £230 worth of free gifts with a creative trick, it’s so easy a child could do it
A SAVVY man handed out £230 worth of freebies from his favorite brands – after writing them POEMS.
Andrew Cunningham from Glasgow discovered a tip-off online claiming that supermarkets are sending out freebies if customers send them a personal rhyme.
The 29-year-old decided to test it out and wrote targeted short poems for 50 of his favorite household brands, restaurants and stores, including Boots, Waitrose and Yorkshire Tea.
Incredibly, Andrew was sent around £230 worth of freebies from 16 of the companies he contacted.
His main gifts included £40 worth of Scrub Daddy supplies, £30 worth of Odeon Luxe cinema tickets and £40 worth of Molton Brown items.
He also received free food and drinks from KFC, Pringles, Richmond and Tunnock’s.
Andrew’s experiment was such a triumph that he is compiling more poems for another 50 companies to see how much more he can get.
Andrew, who runs money blog Capital Matters, said: ‘I had seen people posting online that they were getting free stuff from supermarkets after sending a poem.
“I thought, why not try it at other places and grocery stores?” “I wandered around my house making notes of the most common brands I use, so if I got freebies I knew I would use them.
“Then I started writing the poems – I tried to personalize them, focusing on all the things I liked about that brand.
“I sent 50 and got 16 freebies back, which is a 32 percent conversion rate.
“If I’ve learned anything from this, it’s that if you want to buy something expensive soon, you can email them a poem and they might give you a discount or a free gift.”
While many brands didn’t respond to him – from Persil to Disney Store and Tresemme to Moet – several did.
After sending personalized poems, he received a 16-pack of AA batteries from Duracell and free cinema tickets from both Odeon Luxe and Scotsman Picturehouse, Edinburgh.
He also received a 50 per cent discount voucher for his local Thai restaurant, Thaikun, in Glasgow, and tea cakes with a matching branded hat from Tunnock’s.
Andrew said: “The branded wool hat was probably the funniest thing I got. They also sent me a box of tea biscuits.”
Poem template
If you’re looking for inspiration to copy Andrew’s poem hack, he’s outlined some of his successful poems below.
Andrew’s first approach was Yorkshire Tea, with the following poem: “O Yorkshire Tea, your caffeine-free concoction, is a perfect tranquility, a true gift from heaven.
“For in every cup you bring a grace, a gentle comfort, a warm embrace.
“With Yorkshire Tea my heart finds peace, a moment of peace in every sip.”
He was sent £10 free decaffeinated tea bags as a thank you for the poem.
Some of his most successful achievements included receiving a gift box from Scrub Daddy worth £40 after sending them the following poem: ‘Scrub Daddy, a sponge that’s a gem, that soaks through scrubs again and again stays.
“The smiley face grins through the mess, with durability that is simply the best.
“From tough to gentle, it will never fail. A kitchen hero built to conquer.”
He was also given a selection of handwashing products and a branded soap holder from Molton Brown, which he also estimated fetched around £40.
His poem to Molton Brown read: ‘Molton Brown, we first met in ’16, since then you have become my self-care routine.
