This suggests that there are many leaders in the opposition parties who are “capable” of handling the work of the LoP, the Delhi MP, however, said the onus is on the Opposition to make that call as it is an “internal matter”.
However, this claim has not been confirmed by the opposition parties so far. Normally, only an MP from the largest party in the opposition with at least 10 percent seats can be appointed as LoP. Rahul Gandhi was appointed as LoP in the Lok Sabha, with the Congress Party becoming the largest opposition party in the House after the Lok Sabha results.
The BJP MP made these comments in response to questions on discussions about opposition parties possibly rotating the LoP position in the Lok Sabha.
“Yes, absolutely. I have also heard that there is talk of rotation for the position of Opposition Leader. But I would politely say that this is an internal matter of the opposition,” Swaraj told a press conference at the party headquarters in Delhi. .
“Yes, there are certainly many leaders in the opposition parties who are very capable of fulfilling the responsibility of the leader of the opposition. If the INDI Alliance feels that Rahul Gandhi is unable to discharge his responsibility with full dedication, they must take such responsibility. decision,” she added.
When asked if the LoP post could be made on a rotating basis, former Lok Sabha Secretary General said PDT Achary explained that according to news agency PTI, only an MP from the largest opposition party in the House of Representatives can be appointed leader of the opposition.
The person who wants to be appointed LoP by the main opposition party will be chosen by it alone, he said.
“Neither the government nor the chairman have any role to play in this,” Acharya told news agency PTI.
