If this happens, your Samsung Galaxy Ring may not be repairable

Samsung Galaxy Ring is reportedly irreparable if there is damage to any of its components or if the battery runs out. According to a report, the design of the South Korean tech giant’s smart ring could be the reason why it is irreparable, as the process requires the ring to be opened from the inside. It is said that the internal connectivity of the wearable’s circuit board is done in such a way that attempting to disassemble the device could result in it becoming unusable.

Samsung Galaxy Ring Could Be Irreparable

According to a report According to iFixit, the lithium-ion battery is one of the two biggest culprits behind the Galaxy Smart Ring’s lack of repairability. The publication points out that the lithium-ion battery in the Galaxy Ring offers 400 use cycles. However, once the battery has degraded enough and died, it is reportedly not possible to repair the Smart Ring because “you cannot access the battery without destroying the device in the process.”

The publication also shared a computed tomography (CT) scan of the Samsung Galaxy Ring to show the second issue that is leading to its irreparability. The inside of the smart ring is reportedly surrounded by an epoxy resin coating and inside it is the lithium-ion battery and the rest of the circuitry. There is one problem, however. The circuit board is reportedly attached to the battery with a press connector.

For those who don’t know, a press connector is a solderless solution to connect the printed circuit board (PCB) to the battery and induction coil. It is used in cases where space constraints or the nature of the material make it difficult to solder the components. But this leads to the problem that one cannot reach the PCB without damaging the battery, the report said.

So if the publication’s teardown and analysis are true, the Galaxy Smart Ring may not be usable if the battery dies or if its internal circuit board gets damaged in some way. For a device that needs to be worn all day, such damage can be hard to avoid.
