IIT student found dead in hostel room in Guwahati | India News – Times of India
GUWAHATI: A third year Computer Science student of the Indian Institute of Technology was found dead in his hostel room here on Monday, police said. The body of the male student, who hails from Uttar Pradesh, was found in his hostel room Brahmaputra Innthey said.
A police officer said the investigation is still ongoing and the body has been sent for autopsy.
This is the fourth death of a student in IITG this year. On August 9, a female student was reportedly found hanging in her room.
As news of the death spread, a section of students gathered in front of the administration building, demanding justice for the deceased and necessary mental health care for the students at IITG.
“The deceased student was suffering from physical health problems and was mentally disturbed. He was undergoing treatment and could not concentrate on his studies,” a protesting student alleged.
The protesters alleged that although he had submitted the required medical certificates, these were not taken into account and that he subsequently became increasingly depressed.
The Dean of Student Welfare held talks with the protesting students and assured them that their physical and mental well-being is IITG’s top priority.
“IITG is deeply saddened to announce the loss of a student from our community. We extend our sincere condolences to the student’s family, friends and loved ones during this difficult time,” a spokesperson for the institute said.
Student well-being is IITG’s top priority and the school strives to provide support and resources to help students cope with the challenges they may face, he said.
“We encourage our student community to reach out to our support networks. IITG reaffirms its commitment to creating a supportive and safe environment for all students,” the spokesperson said.
“IITG remains committed to prioritizing the mental health and well-being of our student community during these challenging times,” he added.
