Taking care of your lips should be an important step in your skin care routine.
And you may want to use more lip balm now that you’ve discovered that your lips are one of the first places on your face to show signs of aging.
Annoying fine lines can appear on your lips, they can lose volume, lose definition around the cupid’s bow and even pigment changes can occur.
Our lips in particular are susceptible to aging, as the skin on our mouth is much thinner than on the rest of our body.
This makes our lips more susceptible to damage from environmental factors such as UV radiation and pollutants.
Unlike the rest of our skin, lips do not have sebaceous glands, so they cannot produce natural oils to keep them hydrated.

This makes them prone to dryness and cracking, which can contribute to the onset of aging.
Although we may not be aware of it, many anti-aging experts are.
Kat James’s Top Tips
This includes professional make-up artists Cat Jameswho has not let her lips age.
She still has a juicy pout at 51.
And it’s all thanks to her carefully crafted lip care routine and avoidance of matte formulas, which can accentuate the appearance of fine lines and be unnecessarily drying.
Kat told Fabulous all about her lips and revealed that she swears by an exfoliating-and-hydrating method to combat the aging of her lips.
“Lips with lines and texture need a little extra attention,” she tells us.
“The first step to achieving a smoother, more supple appearance is to exfoliate the lip area.
“A favourite among professional make-up artists is the L38 – Resurfacing Lip Peel 2% Mandelic Acid + Pomegranate Enzyme from French brand Typology (£23.90).
“This resurfacing lip peel is concentrated in exfoliating agents that remove dead cells and renew the lip surface.
“As a result, the lips are softened, smoothed and fuller.”
As for makeup, Kat won’t be wearing matte lipstick on her lips.
“When it comes to lipsticks, it’s best to avoid matte formulas if you have lines on your lips,” she says.
“Instead, use tinted balms or lip gloss to create a smooth, soft look on the lips.”
In addition, balms and glosses have a hydrating effect, which helps your lips retain moisture and reduce the signs of aging.
The Importance of Sunscreen in Your Skin Care Routine
Dermatologist and skin care enthusiast Andrea Suarez — better known as Dr. Dray — shared why you should wear sunscreen.
The one thing you can do to make the biggest difference – and this applies to all ages – is to protect your skin from the sun, Andrea emphasizes.
“The vast majority of external aging is caused by ultraviolet exposure,” she continued, and not by “not using a nice serum or not putting 90 different things on your face every day.”
“If you’re not doing this in your twenties, start now.”
But she said that wearing sunscreen alone doesn’t go far enough. Andrea urged that you also wear sun-protective clothing, such as wide-brimmed hats and long sleeves, and that you don’t stay in the sun for too long.
If you do this throughout your life – and all year round, not just in the summer or on sunny days – “the visible signs of sun-induced skin aging will diminish,” says Andrea.
These are wrinkles, impure pigmentation and sagging skin.
