I’m a beauty editor and I’ve discovered the hottest scent of the summer
WHEN Jo Malone London teamed up with Tom Hardy earlier this year to promote the brand’s Cypress & Grapevine fragrance, I didn’t expect them to top the collaboration.
But it worked, and the new source of inspiration for the perfume brand comes from a very unlikely corner: the fictional world (via Peru).
If you haven’t guessed yet, the luxury perfume house’s newest partner in crime is none other than Paddington Bear.
And the scent? Orange marmalade, in honor of Paddington’s favorite sandwich spread.
You may wonder why that would be a good perfume, but the zesty orange scent is the perfect fresh summer scent when you want something that doesn’t smell like the sometimes nauseating smell of sunscreen. Plus, after a few hours on the skin, the scent is spicy and warming. Perfect for when the sun goes down.
At John Lewis, the partnership has been a huge success, with searches for ‘Paddington Bear’ on the website up 128% since last year.
Additionally, sales of the Paddington Bear Collector Bear (as seen in Jo Malone London’s Orange Marmalade campaigns) have increased by 250% since the partnership launched.
The perfume itself is also flying off the shelves and has been the second most searched for beauty product on the John Lewis website since its launch.
And it’s had a knock-on effect across the range, with sales of the brand’s fragrances up 42%.
If you’re also craving the fresh orange scent, here are a few more juicy scents for you to pick.
THE BEST SPICY PERFUMES
Zara Fleur D’Oranger EDP, £25.99 for 100ml
This interpretation of orange was created by none other than perfumer Jo Malone herself (who is no longer associated with Jo Malone London and thus did not work on the Paddington perfume). The scent revolves around orange blossom and offers a comforting, muted scent in comparison to the bright, sparkling, more intrusive, pure orange scents.
Fugazzi Fragrances Orange Crush EDP, £70 for 50ml
Combined with musk and wood, the orange opening transitions into a lush scent reminiscent of the viral (and mega-expensive) Maison Francis Kurkdjian Baccarat Rouge 540 Eau de Parfum.
Orange Crush is a showstopper, yet subtle enough to wear every day. A true perfume for all occasions.
The Body Shop Satsuma Body Mist, £12 for 100ml
Since it is a body mist, the orange scent of this spray is much more subtle than most other sprays. However, considering the price tag, you can apply it liberally to make up for the lack of potency.
It’s fresh and spicy, just like the smell of freshly peeled fruit.
If you want to try an affordable orange scent, you can’t go wrong with this one!

If you have ever used the orange juicer at the supermarket, you will notice that it smells exactly like the oranges being squeezed in the machine.
It’s delicious and one spray will instantly brighten up a lazy summer afternoon.
The wear time may not be optimal, but the brand also has a handy travel version, which is perfect for topping up throughout the day when you need a pick-me-up.
Clinique Happy for Men Cologne Spray, £68 for 100ml
Although this is officially a fragrance for men, it is actually quite a unisex perfume and comes very close to the perfume Jo Malone London Orange Marmalade.
It’s a little more complex than most of the other flavors on this list, with a trio of citrus notes (orange, lime And lemon) combined with aquatic notes that give it a salty taste, anchored by musk and cedarwood to give it more depth and longevity – hence it lingers all day long.
