With that in mind, it’s important not to choose a breed just because they are “trendy” or look cute.

Veterinarians around the world are increasingly urging pet owners to thoroughly research breeds before welcoming a new four-legged friend into their home.

Choosing the perfect breed requires even more thought if you have small children at home.

That’s why the dog experts are here The spruce animals have shared their “worst dog breeds for kids.”

At the top of their no-go list for parents is the Weimaraner.

They explained: “They were bred to hunt large game – a prey species that can be quite similar in size to a child under the age of 13.

“While this trait does not mean that a Weimaraner will be constantly on the hunt when he is at home, it does mean that he is known for being rough with his people.

“Especially if they would otherwise not get enough exercise and attention.

“The Weimaraner needs a set routine and plenty of time to run, walk and play if he is to behave optimally.

“That can be difficult to maintain when you’re a parent on the go, so you might be better off with a different breed of dog.”

Their second largest no-go breed is a lot smaller: the Chihuahua.

These handbag dogs may be small, but they are known for having a sharp mouth that they are not afraid to use.

The experts at Spruce Pets said: “Because of their small size, many people assume that Chihuahuas are suitable for families with small children, but the opposite is true.

“These little guys rely on their mouths to protect them where their stature cannot, and respond by barking – and sometimes biting – when they feel the need to defend themselves.

“Many Chihuahuas need personal space.

“They will give a lot of social cues if someone outside their primary caregiver enters their zone and makes them feel uncomfortable.

“The problem is that children are not good at reading signals, and a Chi can become aggressive.”

Akitas – a large Japanese mountain dog breed – are the third least family-friendly dog, according to The Spruce Pets.

The experts said: “Akitas can be incredibly sweet and loyal, but they have also been bred for years as guard dogs.

“The instincts that arise from this type of breeding can be difficult to reverse and can pose a problem at play dates and other occasions when unknown children visit your home.

‘Akita’s want to protect their families.

“That includes your children and they may view other children who pass by and yell or scream as a threat.

“Their natural guard-driven instincts can kick in and an injury can occur.

“The same rule applies if you don’t have young children at home, but invite them over; Rambunctious children can trigger a defensive response.”
