I’m a fashion ed – socks and sandals aren’t a sin, they’re THE summer look

The length of socks has been an issue for a while now due to the age gap. Now Clemmie Fieldsend reveals that the garments are a symbol of how stylish you are.

There was a time when rolled-up socks were the ultimate fashion sin, more associated with retirement homes than catwalks.

But the once boring accessory has now become a sexy style statement.

Even wearing socks with sandals, once a major fashion blunder, is one of this season’s most popular looks.

This is the summer of the sock.

Not only are they an inexpensive way to freshen up your wardrobe, they’ve also appeared on several runways, with Gucci models pairing striped sports socks with loafers.

Miu Miu, the world’s largest fashion brand based on Lyst Index’s first quarter report, also sent models down the catwalk in calf-length socks paired with mini skirts this summer.

Miu Miu socks aren’t cheap: a pair of plain pink socks costs £400.

The Row sells pairs for £210.

This makes Gucci’s socks a bargain at £150.

And yet we wear them, in the name of fashion.

Even at 30 degrees Celsius.

Primark fans are stocking up on ‘cute’ teddy bear socks that are an exact copy of the chic Ralph Lauren socks

Gen Z is calling millennials dinosaurs for wearing socks that go below the ankle. There are now over 40 million TikTok posts discussing the style of socks.

But according to the young people, it’s over if you’re still wearing team sports socks.

According to fashion bible Vogue, socks can make or break your outfit this summer. And according to John Lewis, sales are up 90 percent year-on-year.

Sales of all socks have increased by 66 percent in the past six months.

And celebrities are fueling this trend.

In sunny Los Angeles and on the hottest days here in the UK, celebrities are pulling up their knee-high wool sweaters.

These socks are also called the ‘cocktail sock’ and are suitable for evening wear and red carpet outfits.

Actress Sydney Sweeney, 26, and former EastEnder Maisie Smith, 23, opted for sensuous 10 denier nylons with short hems, while singer Sabrina Carpenter, 25, favoured white sports socks with heeled sandals and a mini skirt.

Emma Corrin, 28, and cast member of The Crown, pulled out her old ankle socks while promoting the film Deadpool & Wolverine.

And it’s not just people under 30 who cover their ankles.

Top Boy star Saffron Hocking, 30, kept her ankles covered as she appeared at Glastonbury this year, as did Cara Delevingne, 32, and 28-year-old Anya Taylor-Joy.

Taylor Swift, 34, touched down in London for the final leg of her European tour and hit up the private members club Annabel, wearing platform Mary Janes that hugged her long legs and paired them with crisp white socks.

Actress Rosamund Pike, 45, wore black nylons with her heels for a Dior couture show, and Serena Williams, 42, swapped her tennis socks for classic school shoes during Paris Fashion Week.

Even when you’re walking around at home, don’t opt for the fluffy, now lumpy Primark shoes with a gaping hole at the toe.

Follow 37-year-old model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley’s lead and wear sheer socks for the ultimate seductive at-home look.

It’s all very silly, but luckily there are no rules.

Aside from the fact that your socks that aren’t visible should never be seen, you can wear any style and length.

And, most importantly, every shoe, so you don’t have to spend money on new shoes.

You would punish your grandfather for wearing socks and sandals, but it turns out we should respect our elders after all.

They were right all along.
