I’m a Fashion Editor – Why I Get My Summer Wardrobe From the Supermarket
MODE editor and mother of one Antonia Kraskowski shops for her fashion on the supermarket shelves.
This summer I’m swapping designer and chain clothing for clothes I can buy while grocery shopping at the local supermarket.
Not only is it convenient and cheap, but the clothing departments of supermarkets have also become fashion destinations, regularly offering trendy, high-quality items.
The proof is in the pudding: Asda’s George clothing brand now earns more than £1.5 billion a year, while Sainsbury’s Tu is the UK’s sixth-largest clothing retailer by turnover.
As a fashion editor, I have been active in the supermarket fashion world for a number of years.
But now I’m going for it all the way.
From summer dresses to rain gear and clothes for my son: I provide the whole family with the right items while doing the big weekly shopping.
The weather is a bit unpredictable, but a summer dress is a must-have at this time of year.
Some of the best can be found at Asda.
George’s crisp cotton poplin midi dresses could easily be mistaken for those from luxury brand Cos.
90s raver style
They’re available in the supermarket’s premium Studio Edit collection and cost just £35.
I’ve also spotted a plain pleated dress that has a hint of designer brand Roksanda, while the delicate polka dot styles, which cost just £26, are reminiscent of Rixo and are great options for summer weddings.
For formal occasions or a night out during the festive season, most fashion editors would say their secret weapon is F&F at Tesco.
This season, the sequined collection wouldn’t look out of place in Ibiza’s chicest beach clubs.
The items in light, cream and iridescent shades can be combined with silky, tailored pieces.
The line has been launched in collaboration with inthestyle.co.uk, the only online stockist of this collection.
If you don’t like glitter, you will also find beautiful broderie anglaise on the shelves.
Now that summer is getting wet, windbreakers and raincoats are on my shopping list.
Lidl’s boots (£11.99), shell jackets (£10.99) and own-brand bucket hats (£4.99) have been a surprise hit and have been spotted at many festivals.
These primary-colored pieces stand out for their humorous 90s raver style.
The discounter’s summer collection is now also available in the middle aisle.
I never thought I’d buy fashion items from Lidl, but the collection has everything you need for your summer wardrobe, including sandals (which I always wear), kimonos and dresses, with prices starting from £6.99.
Unfortunately, summer isn’t all vacations and heat waves. Sometimes we have to drag ourselves to the office.
One of my favorite workwear tricks is Tu’s excellent tailoring
Antonia
One of my favorite workwear tips is Tu’s excellent tailoring.
And it doesn’t cost a fortune to update your work wardrobe or fix up a pair of jeans.
You’ve got a lightweight navy jacket, made from a linen blend with a subtle pinstripe, for £32.
I’m not the only one who shops in the fashion departments of the supermarket.
My toddler Mylo loves coming home from daycare covered in mud, paint and glitter, so I don’t want to spend a fortune on his clothes.
Tesco’s Fred & Flo collection has been a favourite of mine since he was a baby, with cute sleepsuits in trendy patterns, while Tu’s Gruffalo collection is an absolute favourite for my little one.
If you’re looking for some cool clothes for a little boy that aren’t full of tractors, cars or dinosaurs, I’m a fan of Tu’s unisex tie-dye tees (from £4), while Fred & Flo have a great range of chic striped pieces.
My secret weapon for revamping Mylo’s summer wardrobe?
George’s linen shorts are an absolute bargain: £8 for a pair.
And now that the summer sales are in full swing, I’m already scouring the racks looking for clothes that will fit him next summer or coats for the winter.
Now is the time to find the best bargains.
It’s also worth signing up for loyalty programs so you get more bang for your buck.
With Tesco’s Clubcard you often get up to 25 percent discount on F&F.
With Asda’s Rewards app, you can also save on both your weekly shop and fashion must-haves.
In addition to collecting points that you can convert into euros with every purchase, you will also receive exclusive discounts on selected products.
This weekend you can get 20 percent off selected items when you spend at least £30 online, including the gorgeous dresses from The Edit collection.
