A food safety expert explains why you should never store bread in the fridge.

Sarah Taylor, from High-Speed ​​​​Training, warns that keeping bread in the refrigerator can cause it to go stale.

She explained: ‘You should never keep bread in the refrigerator.

‘This is because the cold conditions in the refrigerator cause the starch to recrystallize, giving the bread a musty taste and texture.’

She added: ‘If you tend to use your bread slowly, you may want to freeze it. This will keep the bread edible and prevent mould from developing.’

For anyone who wants to keep their bread fresh longer, Sarah recommended buying sliced ​​bread, noting that mold spreads less quickly than with freshly baked bread.

“The average supermarket loaf of bread will no longer be fresh after a week, while that tempting freshly baked bread will spoil even faster. That’s something to think about when choosing bread,” she added.

However, if you want to enjoy the health benefits of fresh bread, or want to bake your own bread at home, there is no need to panic.

Regardless of how you store your bread – whether you keep it in a bread bin or in its original packaging – you should always aim to keep it in a cool, dry place.

She gave another handy tip: she urged against packing bread in plastic containers in warm conditions.

She explains: ‘If the bread is in a plastic package, it can ‘sweat’ in warm environments, causing moisture to build up in the package.

‘To prevent this, it is best to use a bread bin or a breathable bag. If you have no other option, you can also store the bread in a cool, dry cupboard. This can slow down the process.’

Her final tip for keeping bread fresh for longer is to keep it away from water at all costs, as this accelerates the growth of mold.

The food safety guru said: ‘Moist, wet environments are the ideal conditions for mould spores to grow and spread faster than normal. Slow this down by keeping the bread as dry as possible.’
