I’m a foodie and I swear by my 99 cent hack for keeping bananas fresh
A FOODIE has revealed a 99p hack to keep bananas fresh for five days.
Bananas are a classic healthy snack and can be eaten in smoothies, banana bread or on their own.
However, they can turn brown quite quickly after you buy them, meaning they are often lost.
With that in mind, cooking enthusiast Zakiyya AK Manjoo revealed her simple trick to prevent bananas from turning brown right away.
Taking to TikTok, the busy mom said: “Are you tired of buying bananas only for them to turn brown in two days?”
Zakiyya explained her hack and recommended buying some cling film, which you can pick up at the supermarket for 99 cents.
Cut it into strips and wrap a strip of cling film around the stem of each banana.
Zakiyya demonstrated the hack and then showed off what her bananas looked like almost a week later.
“After five days, all they have are a few black dots,” she said.
“This hack really works.”
Zakiyyas (@culinairevlogsbyz) video has probably left a lot of people impressed as it has been viewed over 122,000 times on the video sharing platform.
TikTok users rushed to the comments section of the video to share their thoughts on the useful hack.
One person said, “This works with foil too!”
A second person said: “Thanks for sharing, useful hack.”
Another person said: “I needed this, my three year old won’t eat bananas with even a single dot on them.”
Fridge or cupboard? The essential guide to food storage
Food must be stored properly to keep it fresh and prevent the spread of bacteria.
Nutritionist Birgit Brendel said bread has a longer shelf life if kept in the refrigerator or freezer.
However, this can affect the taste.
Storing in ceramic or earthenware containers is an alternative that allows air to flow easily and slows the growth of mold.
Robert Morris, director of food safety consultants, Complete Food Safety, revealed the best place to store fresh fruit and vegetables.
He said salad foods should be kept in the fridge drawer, but away from anything growing in the ground, such as carrots, parsnips and beetroot.
Tomatoes are an exception to the rule, as refrigerators can alter the natural ripening process and reduce their flavor.
He also advised against storing avocados and bananas in the refrigerator, as this causes them to turn black more quickly.
And Zakiyya isn’t the only one who swears by this hack.
Food expert Mike took to his YouTube channel KeukenTipsOnline to tell how he was able to keep his bananas fresh for no less than 15 days with this trick.
He said: “Day 12 we still had a little bit of green on the bananas.
“Day 15 – you will notice that there is still some green on the bananas.
“When we cut it open, you can see there’s a little bit of bruising on the bottom, but that’s the weight of the bananas causing the bruising in the container.
“As you can see, these bananas are still quite edible.”
