I’m a gardening guru and there’s a disastrous lawn bug that’s encouraging weeds
IF you want your lawn to look impressive this season, you’ve come to the right place.
With the weather finally getting warmer, more and more Brits are looking to spend time in their gardens.
And if you want your neighbors to stare at your lawn with open mouths, you’ll have to pay close attention and take notes.
It turns out that many people make a common mistake when pruning their lawn, which actually causes weeds to grow.
So if you’re tired of spending hours on your hands and knees weeding, we have the solution for you.
Oliver Johnson, a gardening guru from HomeAdviesGids.comhas provided advice on common lawn care mistakes made by homeowners and how to avoid them.
Oliver also shares some simple maintenance tips to keep your lawn in top condition.
According to the horticultural expert, a major mistake is overwatering the lawn, which can be “disastrous.”
Overwatering can lead to waterlogging, which hinders root growth.
In wet conditions, additional watering may not be necessary.
But now that the UK is set to experience warm weather in the coming next one Every few days, gardeners should provide about an inch of water per week to keep the lawn moist without causing flooding.
Another big no-no is scalping the lawn, which Oliver described as a “recipe for disaster.”
Mowing the grass too short may seem like a quick way to spare the grass, but it actually causes the grass to become ‘stressed’ and susceptible to disease, drought and pests.
In addition, another lawn professional, Chris Bonnett, founder of Gardening Express, warned that when mowing long grass, the “biggest mistake you can make” is to cut it too short.
Royal gardener Jack Stook’s best tips for green lawns
JACK, who has worked at King Charles’ Highgrove House for 20 years, shares his top tips.
- Scarify the lawn with a rake to remove old leaves and moss
- Add nitrogen fertilizer to the soil
- You can also spread granular fertilizer over the lawn, or spread a ‘plant soup’ of plant material over the lawn.
Chris explained that this can damage the roots, promote weed growth and damage lawn mowers.
Instead, he recommended aiming for a height of about 3 inches.
Seasonal Lawn Maintenance Schedule
Lawn maintenance varies by season. Some tasks stimulate growth and root development, while others help maintain soil quality.
Claire Baglin, manager of the landscape architecture category of Tool station shared lawn care tasks and tips for every season:
Spring (March April May)
- Start mowing the lawn every two weeks in March, when soil and air temperatures are generally above 6°C.
- Fertilize the lawn for the first time in March with a fast-acting fertilizer rich in nitrogen. This fertilizer promotes shoot growth.
- Scarify the lawn for the first time in April to remove moss and felt that can build up over the winter.
- Aerate the lawn in April by poking holes in the soil surface. This will help loosen the soil and promote growth.
- In April you can also sow to fill in thin or bare spots.
Summer (June July August)
- From June onwards, start mowing your lawn once a week – except in periods of extreme heat and drought. Raise the mowing height to protect the lawn from possible drought.
- Make sure you treat the lawn for weeds in June. You can do this manually for individual weeds or with a weed killer for larger clusters.
- Make sure to water the lawn at least once a week in July and August by letting it soak for 5 to 10 minutes.
Autumn (September October November)
- From September onwards, you can reduce the mowing frequency to once every two weeks and carry out the last mowing of the year in November.
- Fertilize the lawn for the second time in October with a slow-release fertilizer rich in phosphorus and potassium to strengthen the lawn.
- In October and November, remove all fallen leaves and other debris from the lawn.
Winter (December, January, February)
- Leave the lawn alone from December to the end of February. Grass usually does not grow in the colder winter temperatures.
- Winter is the ideal time of year to perform maintenance on your lawn mower, including checking the blades and filters.
This way the grass retains its top growing point, keeping it strong and resilient.
Another essential but often overlooked aspect of lawn care is aeration, which is “critical” for “healthy growth.”
The horticultural professionals indicated that aeration involves making holes in the soil to allow water and nutrients to penetrate better.
This is an important step for compacted or clayey soil and can be accomplished with a hand aerator or even a garden fork.
