And she shared her top tip if you want to grow your hair out: don’t wash it.

Speaking with Hype Club Podcastshe said, “There’s a reason your hair gets greasy. It’s not actually grease, it’s oil.

“Your hair follicles are meant to renew themselves. That’s the point.

“It’s just like your skin. How bad do you feel when your skin is really dry, flaky and tight?

“It’s horrible. Then we put a lot of moisturizer on it.

“Well, how lucky that your head produces all these nutrients to repair your hair.”

Jilly says her clients who get a mesh haircut have a hard time washing their hair underneath, which causes the oil to naturally build up.

“So all those weeks, nutrients are coming in and being replenished,” she explained.

“And we actually see the same thing with hair extensions. A lot of girls get extensions and they can’t wash their hair because they have all that hair now.

“A lot of them just do it with a slick back or they put a little bit of dry shampoo in it, and because the extensions look so good, they think, ‘You don’t actually need to wash this, this looks stylish. ‘

“You go from a girl who has never worn mesh or extensions and washes her hair three times a week to once a week.”

And hair guru Jilly claims that “nine times out of ten” clients find their natural hair is in much better condition and has grown after the mesh or extensions have been removed, because it has “had time to breathe”.

Elsewhere, a haircare expert revealed how she keeps her locks looking “shinier than Cinderella’s shoes.”

Hair-fluencer Kalista has enviably shiny locks since joining the glass hair trend — and it’s all thanks to her blow-dry ritual she performs minutes after showering.

Calista uses her TikTok profile to educate others about hair care and methods they can try to improve their hair.

That also goes for her glass hair routine, which she shared an extensive tutorial about.

She said, “Instead of blow-drying on high heat, we start with hair oil and blow-dry on medium heat.”

Calista warms the hair oil between her palms (you can use any oil) before applying it to the lengths and ends of her locks.

When her hair is 80% dry, she applies some more oil to the ends and then blow-dries it on a low setting.

“And there you have it,” she adds.

“Glass hair that’s shinier than Cinderella’s shoes.”

Glass hair means that the hair looks smooth and well-groomed, without a single frizzy strand to be seen.

The trend has become popular because of the shiny, smooth and almost reflective finish reminiscent of glass – hence the name.

It has become immensely popular in recent years thanks to social media, especially celebrities and influencers.

The 4 Phases of the Hair Growth Cycle

Hair experts at Philip Kingsley shared the four stages of the hair growth cycle: Anagen, Catagen, Telogen and Exogen

Anagen phase:Also called the ‘growth phase’ or ‘active phase’, is the phase in which the cells in the hair root divide most rapidly, causing more new hair to be formed.

During the Anagen Phase, hair grows about half an inch per month [about six inches a year]and faster in summer than in winter.

This phase of the hair growth cycle lasts an average of three to five years.

Catagen phase:After the anagen phase, your hair cycle enters a short transition phase called the catagen phase. This phase marks the end of active hair growth and separates individual hairs from the blood supply and the cells that produce new hair.

About three percent of all hairs are in this stage at any one time and it lasts about 10 days.

Telogen phase:The third phase of your natural hair growth cycle is the telogen phase, a resting period during which hairs remain in their follicles but are not actively growing.

It is estimated that 10-15 percent of your hair is in the telogen phase at any given time.

The telogen phase lasts about three months or 100 days.

Exogenous phase:The final stage of the hair growth cycle, when individual hair strands release from their follicles and fall out.

Now the whole process starts again.
