I’m a ‘Healthy Hair Fairy’ – 5 Common Oil Mistakes That Are Damaging Your Scalp
After successfully growing out her locks, one woman shared the common mistakes to avoid when oiling your hair.
She showed which hair care mistakes many people make.
In her viral videoTikTok user Duygu (@duygu.cdc) told her followers about the five biggest mistakes when oiling hair that can damage your scalp and cause breakage.
The self-proclaimed ‘healthy hair fairy’ showed all the blunders.
Duygu first gave her audience a tip not to apply oil to their hair or scalp after showering.
The experts of Skin Kraft explained why applying oil to dry hair is the best solution.
“Water forms a layer on your hair and scalp that prevents the oil from penetrating,” they wrote.
“When you apply oil to wet hair, [the] water repels it and prevents it from penetrating deeply.”
The TikToker also pointed out that applying oil without properly brushing your strands first can leave your scalp dehydrated.
Removing tangles from your hair will help distribute the oils more evenly.
The hair care professionals at Skin Kraft also recommend against combing your locks after oiling, as they’ll be more prone to breakage.
According to Duygu, another ineffective step is flushing the oil away too quickly.
The experts at Skin Kraft have revealed the minimum amount of time required for hair oils to be effective.
“Leave the oil on your scalp for at least an hour,” the professionals advised.
“This allows the oil to penetrate the hair follicles and nourish your scalp.”
Duygu also told her audience not to massage the hair too hard into the scalp.
The hair care specialists at Skin Kraft spoke about the dangers of massaging ‘too vigorously’.
The 4 Phases of the Hair Growth Cycle
Hair experts at Philip Kingsley shared the four stages of the hair growth cycle: Anagen, Catagen, Telogen and Exogen
Anagen phase:Also called the ‘growth phase’ or ‘active phase’, is the phase in which the cells in the hair root divide most rapidly, causing more new hair to be formed.
During the Anagen Phase, hair grows about half an inch per month [about six inches a year]and faster in summer than in winter.
This phase of the hair growth cycle lasts an average of three to five years.
Catagen phase:After the anagen phase, your hair cycle enters a short transition phase called the catagen phase. This phase marks the end of active hair growth and separates individual hairs from the blood supply and the cells that produce new hair.
About three percent of all hairs are in this stage at any one time and it lasts about 10 days.
Telogen phase:The third phase of your natural hair growth cycle is the telogen phase, a resting period during which hairs remain in their follicles but are not actively growing.
It is estimated that 10-15 percent of your hair is in the telogen phase at any given time.
The telogen phase lasts about three months or 100 days.
Exogenous phase:The final stage of the hair growth cycle, when individual hair strands release from their follicles and fall out.
Now the whole process starts again.
“Massaging your scalp too quickly or too hard can cause your hair to break,” they explained.
Instead, they recommend gently massaging your scalp using slow, circular motions.
Finally, the TikToker advised her audience against applying too much oil to their hair.
The experts at Skin Kraft explain that if you overuse hair oil, you should apply more shampoo to your locks.
“This will strip your hair of its natural oils, along with any excess oil you want to remove,” they explain.
Duygu’s followers shared their thoughts about the advice in the comments.
“I can attest to all these mistakes. I went partially bald, be careful,” warned one viewer.
“I just realized now that I’m doing it wrong,” wrote another TikTok user.
“I don’t think you can ever use too much hair oil,” a third person commented.
“Yes, if you do it every day and you already have an oily scalp, then it can be a problem, but [it’s] Okay, once or twice a week.”
