I’m a mold expert – a 65 cent item in the closet kills spores instantly

A mold expert has revealed a 65-cent trick that can kill spores and prevent them from coming back.

Black mold often occurs in damp areas of the home with little ventilation, such as the kitchen and bathroom. It can be difficult to get rid of.

Brian Tinker, whose company Breathe easy (@breath.easyy, helps people remove mold and other health hazards from their homes. She revealed that a simple method to get rid of spores is to simply use an item you probably already have in your kitchen cupboard.

Brian said on TikTok: “To kill mold, all you need is baking soda.

“Every time baking soda comes into contact with mold, it kills it.

“If you spray it on mold, it can kill mold spores.”

Baking soda is super cheap and you can buy it from Tesco for just 65p.

For this method, simply add a quarter teaspoon of baking soda to 16 ounces of water.

Pour the solution into a plant sprayer and spray the area infected with mold.

Scrub the mold spot clean with a brush before rinsing it off.

Re-treat the area with baking soda to prevent the mold from returning.

An often forgotten spring cleaning can protect your engine from moisture and mold… a common feature of a car that brings additional risks

Brian added that this method can cause spores to fly off the wall and into your home.

To address this problem, the cleaning professional recommended using a fogging machine.

He explained that the machine sprays and spreads water in a cloud over the area, which removes any mold spores from the air and causes them to interact.

The spores fall to the ground and once you clean them up, your home will be mold free.

Common Bathroom Habits That Contribute to Mold Growth

Plumbworld, a leading expert in bathroom and kitchen products, has shared the everyday habits that increase the likelihood of mould growing in homes.

Leaving wet towels and bath mats on the floor

Wet towels and bath mats on the floor after showering or bathing can increase humidity, creating an ideal breeding ground for mold spores.

To prevent this, hang towels and bath mats in a place where they can dry quickly and wash them regularly.

Do not turn on the fan

An extractor fan is essential to reduce humidity in the bathroom.

When you take a hot shower or bath, steam causes the humidity in the room to increase. This creates an ideal environment for mold to grow on walls, ceilings and other surfaces.

An extractor fan ensures that moist air is moved outside, which significantly reduces the chance of mold growth.

Experts advise turning on the fan while showering and for at least 20-30 minutes afterwards to reduce humidity.

Ignore small leaks

Even small leaks from the sink, toilet, or shower can contribute to increased humidity in the bathroom, creating an environment where mold can thrive.

Over time, these leaks can cause significant water damage, promoting mold growth in less visible areas, such as interior walls or under the floor.

Repair leaks as soon as possible to prevent mold and possible structural damage.

Keep shower curtains or doors closed

If you keep the shower closed after use, moisture will remain in the shower. This will slow the drying process and create a damp environment that promotes mold growth.

Mold can easily develop on shower curtains, doors and tile grout if they remain wet for too long.

To prevent this, you can leave the shower door or shower curtain open after use to improve air circulation and dry the room faster.

Storing too many products

Shower caddys and nooks full of bottles and accessories may seem harmless, but they can obstruct airflow, trap moisture and create hidden, damp niches where mold can grow unnoticed.

Keep as few shampoo and shower gel bottles in the refrigerator as possible and clean and dry the areas underneath regularly to prevent mold growth.

Black mold is a fungus that grows in warm, moist conditions, such as in the bathroom.

There are several reasons why mold can form, such as leaking pipes, poor insulation or if condensation is not wiped away after showering.

It is important to remove mold because it can cause many health problems.

According to the NHS, black mould can lead to asthma attacks, allergic reactions and infections.

When removing black mold, it is important to protect yourself by wearing rubber gloves and a mask that covers your nose and mouth.
