I’m a money-saving gardener and it’s easy to grow your own mistletoe for Christmas
A GARDEN that will be the envy of your neighbors this festive season doesn’t have to rely on expensive, light-up decorations.
Anya Lautenbach revealed her simple tips for growing mistletoe before Christmas.
Anya (@anyathegardenfairy) has amassed nearly 8,000 subscribers on YouTube and 668,000 followers on Instagram.
She describes herself as ‘The Money Saving Gardener’, having written a book on how to have a thriving garden on a budget.
Her YouTube Short offering advice on how to grow mistletoe at home unexpectedly went viral.
Anya said, “It’s very easy” to grow mistletoe from seeds without any prior gardening experience or tools.
“To plant your mistletoe seed, you can make a shallow cut to remove a small piece of bark,” she said.
“I have also successfully grown my mistletoe by simply placing a seed on the branch of an apple tree.
“It may take a few months for your mistletoe to appear on the tree, but when it does, it will be absolutely wonderful.”
Anya demonstrated the simple hack before taking a bunch of mistletoe she had previously grown to hang outside her home.
When her husband stepped outside, she kissed him to embrace the mistletoe tradition.
Anya said plants make the best Christmas decorations because they are eco-friendly and affordable.
However, keep in mind to keep mistletoe seeds away from pets as they can cause health problems if eaten.
Anya said mistletoe is known for its “mystical powers” that bring good luck and ward off evil spirits.
Viewers were surprised by how easy the plants were to grow and were keen to try it for themselves.
“Wow thank you, how easy is that!!” one person commented.
“OMG what!!!” said another.
According to the Royal Horticultural Society, apple trees are the “ideal host” for mistletoe.
