I’m a renovation expert, here are my top 10 tips to transform your abandoned home
A RENOVATION expert has revealed her top tips for turning abandoned houses into dream-worthy places.
Jennifer Olivier from Dundee started refurbishing properties ten years ago.
Her late mother left her some money after her tragic death, which she decided to use to renovate properties.
Speaking to the CourierJennifer revealed her top ten renovations tips.
She advised that instead of hiring and managing many people, it is best to hire a lead trader who will oversee the project.
She said: “A typical project can use between five and twelve different transactions.
“Don’t try to find these people individually and manage them yourself. Chaos will ensue.
‘Rather, find one main craftsman, usually a furniture maker, and let them recruit the people they work with.’
Jennifer also explained that it’s not wise to break the bank by hiring a fancy firm for a mundane project.
Following recommendations from friends and listening to positive ones reviews is another tip she shares.
“A recommended person will probably be busy for quite some time. The good ones always are. Wait for them,” she added.
The renovation expert further advised that you should stay informed of the architect’s plans and ensure that they are available to contractors.
Elsewhere, Jennifer advised always thinking about the “little” decisions, such as where to place sockets – and taking into account the cost of waste removal.
She said: “Skips are expensive and permits may be required.
“Rules change between municipalities, so find out in advance. Some charge per day what others charge per month. A man with a van service may prove to be more economical.”
Meanwhile, DIY enthusiasts should have a written contract that includes all the fine print.
She concludes her list by encouraging people to compare prices and be transparent with professionals about what is needed.
Jennifer concludes by advising others to enjoy the process and the end result.
“Believe people when they tell you that it will be worth it in the end. It always is,” she emphasizes.
Elsewhere, rogue traders are targeting Generation Z, as they have no idea about DIY beyond the elderly.
