I’m a single mom, people say it’s harder that way, but I disagree
Becoming a single parent isn’t how most of us expect having a family to go.
But one mother who became single after the birth of her daughter shared how much better it is than being in a relationship.
Leah Mogford took to social media to say that life hasn’t gotten any easier since the split.
She said, “People may not agree with what I’m about to say, but I’m going to say it anyway.
“I think it’s easier to be a single mom than a mom in a relationship.”
The mother said it was easier for several reasons, one of which was that she didn’t have to constantly think about the division of labor between the two of them.
“Why did I have to sacrifice my whole life? He sacrificed nothing?” she added.
She also indicated that it was difficult because she was constantly thinking about her daughter’s needs, while he was not.
Leah added that it led to constant arguments and that they eventually had little to no relationship.
Now that they are separated and raising their children together, life has become a lot easier and the two can have a healthy relationship again.
She went on to say that being a single parent had made her “10x easier and less stressful” and that she was “much happier” for it.
“To the girls out there who feel this way and are still in the relationship, know your worth and know that you don’t have to do everything just for your baby,” she captioned the clip.
The clip she posted on her TikTok account @leah_mogfordxx quickly went viral with over 100,000 views and 7,000 likes.
Many mothers responded in the comments and many agreed with her position.
Someone wrote: “100%. I had to talk to him like I talk to my child and tell him what to do, it’s mentally exhausting.”
Another commented: “I totally agree with this. At least if they have kids on the weekends they’re forced to take on parenting duties.”
“Single mom of 3 and I agree 100%. I can do what I want, when I want with my kids and don’t have to talk to anyone else about it first,” wrote a third.
Statistics for single mothers
- Population: Single mothers make up a significant proportion of the family structure in the UK. According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), there were around 1.8 million single-parent households in the UK in 2020, the vast majority of which were headed by women.
- Employment: Employment rates for single mothers have increased in recent years. According to ONS data, around 72% of single mothers were employed in 2019. However, this figure can fluctuate due to economic conditions and policy changes.
- Income and poverty: Single mothers are more likely to experience economic hardship compared to two-parent families. The Child Poverty Action Group (CPAG) reports that single-parent families are at higher risk of poverty. In 2020, about 49% of children in single-parent families lived in poverty.
- Housing: Single mothers are more likely to live in rented accommodation than two-parent families. Social housing is a common option, but many also rent privately, which often entails higher costs and less security.
- Education and childcare: Access to affordable childcare remains a significant issue for single mothers, impacting their ability to work and gain education. The government provides some support through programs such as Universal Credit and childcare vouchers, but gaps remain.
Meanwhile, a fourth said: “100000%! I couldn’t agree with you more. I felt this so badly.”
“I agree! It’s so true!” claimed a fifth.
Someone else added: “I found that without him I didn’t have as much to do around the house, which confirmed that this was the best choice.”
