I’m a teacher, parents hate that I don’t allow ‘entitled’ children to use the toilet in class

A primary school teacher has revealed the real reasons why she refuses to let children use the toilet in class, leaving parents furious.

The UK-based teacher, who goes by the name Home Learning Haven online, explained why she’s introducing the rule and why parents should stop complaining about it.

She said on social media: “I’m just sitting here on my lunch break, checking reading books and I’m thinking about the whole problem parents have with teachers not letting their kids go to the toilet.

“And today I had about three instances where I didn’t let the kids go to the bathroom.”

She hoped that parents would stop complaining about the situation if they shared their reasons for it. However, many parents were still angry about the rule.

The teacher said the first reason was that she had started an activity with two children, where they were reading to each other, but one of them wanted to go to the toilet during the task.

The teacher said no, because the activity would then be pointless for both the child and his partner.

Nextthe teacher refused to allow a child to go to the toilet while she was explaining their math activity.

She said, “No, because if you go to the toilet now, I’ll have to explain the procedure to you again when you come back.”

The teacher admitted that she does let children go to the toilet, but in these situations she asks them to wait a few minutes so they can hear her instructions.

Finally, she said she would ask a child to wait if he or she had just come back from recess.

Of course, the teacher would simply begin the lesson and at that point give the children important information that she did not want them to miss.

She concluded: “There will be times when, as a teacher, I will say to your child, ‘Not now, not now,’ that he is not allowed to go to the toilet.

“And I think parents stand behind them and think that we just want to take away their child’s human rights.

“It’s not that. We’re only human. And most teachers really care about kids, which is why they’re in this job in the first place.”

“If you want your child to get special treatment, regular public school is probably not the right place to send them. Some parents really set their children up for failure in real life with all the pampering and demands,” she wrote in the post.

The clip posted on social media went viral on her TikTok account @home learning port with more than 700,000 views and 20,000 likes.

Parents shared their thoughts in the comments, and many seemed unconvinced by the teacher’s reasoning.

Someone wrote: “Honestly, I don’t know how you deal with parents these days, it must be exhausting!”

Another noted, “None of the four reasons are valid enough.”

“Toilet should always be allowed whenever they need it,” wrote a third.

Meanwhile, a fourth said: “No, sorry, they should always be allowed to leave if they ask.”

“I’ll be honest, I’ve told my son that if he needs to go to the toilet and he’s told he can’t, as a mother I give him permission to leave the classroom,” claimed a fifth.

Someone else added: “When you have to go to the toilet, that’s all you’re focusing on. So the child isn’t really taking in the information and it’s likely that it will need to be repeated anyway?”
