Trichologist for Free willMelissa Mallam lives in McKinney, Texas.

She helps men and women grow their hair and regain their self-confidence.

She specializes in hair loss and scalp problems and told The US Sun about a styling mistake she sees all too often.

Besides the obvious culprits like hair dye and heat styling, Mallam has another must-go for those wanting fuller hair.

“You can damage your hair by treating it badly,” she told The US Sun.

She warned of one technique that could be harmful.

“Detangle your hair by brushing or combing it from the roots, rather than from the ends to the roots, which can cause breakage and unnecessary hair loss,” she said.

Mallam advised making hair care so easy that you can even do it while you sleep.

“I also recommend using microfiber towels and satin or silk hair ties and pillowcases,” she added.

WHEN YOU DON’T HAVE TO WORRY

Mallam assured that not all hair loss is a sign of a problem. According to him, some hair loss is caused by “hair growth cycles.”

“Hair growth cycles are the different stages your hair goes through: active (anagen), transition (catagen), and resting (telogen),” the researcher said.

“Most people have hair in all stages at the same time.”

She described hair loss as a “natural process,” while hair loss is “excessive.”

“Hair naturally sheds 50 to 100 strands a day. That’s normal,” she said.

“The hairs that fall out make way for the hairs in the transition phase (catagen) to move into the resting phase (telogen). These are the hairs that fall out.”

According to Mallam, texture also plays a role in the hair growth cycle, which can make people with curly hair think they are losing hair when in fact it is just falling out.

“Everyone has their normal amount of hair loss,” she said. “I think we all know what’s normal for us.”

BEST PRACTICES FOR HAIR CARE

Mallam outlined when hair loss can be a serious cause for concern.

“[Hair loss is concerning] “When you notice that you are losing more hair than normal,” she said.

“It may also look like your hair is thinning and your parting is getting wider, or your ponytail is looking less full.

“And when you see that there are bald spots and your scalp is shiny smooth.”

She gave some tips to keep your hair healthy, including a balanced diet, scalp massages, regular haircuts, reducing stress and balancing your gut flora.

“The sooner you address hair loss, the better,” she said.

“Hair can recover for eight to ten years, depending on the type of hair loss you experience.

“Consult a trichologist as soon as possible if you notice any concerns.”
