I’m a vet and there are 5 animals I would never have as pets
A vet has revealed five animals he would never have as pets, including a popular choice that he said will leave you scared for your bank account due to expensive health problems.
TikToker Ben the vet, (@ben.the.vet) explained that he would never advise anyone to buy any of the pets on his list, not because he doesn’t like them, but because of the difficulties of owning them.
Parrots
First on Ben’s list are parrots, for an unusual reason that you probably haven’t thought of yet.
“Having a parrot means you never have to have a non-stick pan again – no joke, when heated the coating releases a gas that can be fatal to parrots,” he explained.
He added that parrots can be “extremely difficult” because they need a lot of space and stimulation.
Mice
Ben revealed that mice only live for one or two years, so it can be difficult to get attached to them.
He said: “I have had many guinea pigs over the years, and you become very attached to them.
“It’s hard enough to say goodbye after four or five years, but for me, as a length of time to build a bond with a pet and then have to say goodbye to it, a year is too short.”
Rabbits
Rabbits are a popular choice as a pet for children, but Ben said they don’t actually get along well in homes with children.
He revealed that they are very timid by nature, so they don’t enjoy being picked up.
He added: “They kick and they fall from your arms from a height onto the ground.
“It’s not unheard of for them to break limbs and even their spines.”
The vet added that they are also prone to health problems, which can lead to expensive vet bills.
“They can be great pets if you invest the time, but too many people let them go in the cage and forget about them,” he said.
Monkeys
Although you might think no one has a pet monkey, according to Ben, 5,000 people in the UK own a primate.
Ben revealed that he had been volunteering at a nature reserve and had seen many baby monkeys taken from their mothers so they could be sold as pets.
The vet labeled these actions as ‘sick’ and said: ‘A monkey is an extremely intelligent wild animal – not a domesticated species like cats or dogs.
He added that they have complex needs, and urged Britons not to get one.
Ferrets
Last on Ben’s list is the ferret, which he says is an acquired taste.
He said: “They are cheeky, funny and entertaining pets, but it is an acquired taste.
“They really stink and if they cling to your hand they will get nasty bites.”
