I’m a working-class mom and I grew up poor, but I’m raising middle-class kids
A working-class mother has revealed she has decided to raise middle-class children – and she finds their chic hilarious.
Kirsty Mac, 36, grew up in a Glasgow scheme and remembers living without central heating and getting into trouble with friends outside for her own pleasure.
But it’s a completely different story for her nine-year-old daughter, who likes to eat fancy food and has a taste for the finer things in life.
The mother of two, author of Not All Mothers Love Their Baby: (well, not right away anyway), can’t help but laugh at the differences in their upbringing.
The Glasgow PANDAS volunteer said: “It just makes me laugh.
“My daughter has been to Disney World, Disneyland and Portugal. She just has life.
‘Her favorite sandwich is cheese and apple. She comes home and says different words – and says baths like barth.
“They can go to the store and buy toys – that’s ridiculous. They are not spoiled.
“They just have a very different life. It’s very different from how I grew up.”
Her partner comes from an affluent area outside Glasgow and that may be why their children view life differently from their mother.
Their diets are different, they don’t speak slang, and her daughter’s favorite store is House of Bruar – an upscale store that sells hunting equipment and clothing that cost thousands of dollars.
Kirsty, who has completed a degree and now owns a house with her partner, said: “I didn’t know what mussels or squid were until later in life. I mispronounced sorbet as ‘painful gamble’.
‘Now I have to teach her what a piece is: it’s a piece of sausage and not a sausage sandwich.
‘I say housecoat, my children say dressing gown. She has a more middle-class way of speaking.
‘She is very correct in the way she uses her sentences.
“The way she speaks and pronounces words is very elegant. She has a different accent – it’s a mix.
“My kids love their fruit. My daughter loves this raw honey: salted caramel.
‘I have to go to the market to get it. Who likes raw honey at the age of nine?’
