For many Britons who choose to move abroad, it can be a stressful, yet exciting experience.

While there is an opportunity to start a new chapter in your life, you will also have to adapt to a different environment and possibly learn a new language as well.

Add to that the often difficult scenario of arranging finances and accommodation in a new country, and it suddenly doesn’t seem such an exciting experience anymore.

Luckily, moving experts have shared with you the top three tips you should check off your checklist before moving abroad.

They broke down the essential tasks into manageable timelines, covering two months, one month, and the week leading up to the move.

Mike Harvey, managing director at 1st Move International, discussed the tasks you should complete at least two months before your move: ‘Preparing your legal documents is the most important step you should complete well in advance.’

‘Make sure your passports are valid and arrange any necessary visas and permits. Also arrange international transfers with your bank and arrange your health, home and car insurance for your new location.’

The moving guru also said to document the details of your move by confirming dates with your moving company, taking inventory and filing your insurance claim.

Around this time, you should also meet your financial obligations by paying bills, loans, and other obligations, checking your credit cards for international eligibility, and notifying institutions of your upcoming move.

Finally, don’t forget to confirm your travel plans and local arrangements a week before your move by checking flight and accommodation bookings and notifying your local council and electoral register of your move.

Also make sure you are well prepared for your trip by bringing enough cash for travel expenses and charging any necessary electronics.

This is also the time to cancel any newspapers, food subscriptions, and other regular deliveries.

Mr Harvey commented on moving abroad: ‘Before you move, it is vital to take some key steps to ensure your move abroad goes as smoothly as possible.

This is a lengthy process and must begin at least 2 months before your departure.

‘Financial arrangements should be made well in advance. For example, you should inform your banks and credit card companies of the move. This will prevent you from having problems obtaining money abroad.

‘It is also important to pay outstanding bills and forward mail to a designated address to prevent correspondence from being lost.’
