I’m an interior design professional and here are the three home icks I can’t stand, I’ll judge you
AN INTERIOR designer has revealed the three design horrors that give her the ‘ick’.
The expert explained that the poor choices can make your home look cheaper and less welcoming.
So if you want to impress your guests with your interior, then you have come to the right place and you should take notes.
Julia Hofmannwho owns her own boutique interior design studio in Glasgow, shared her honest thoughts on flooring choices and the sofas she can’t stand.
The design expert also explained why wall stickers in the nursery are not as good an idea as you might think.
She said on social media: “Hi, I’m Julia Hoffman from Julia Hoffman Interiors and I’m back with more interior design tips.”
Here’s what she had to say…
Floors
First, Julia said she would make people angry with a “controversial choice.”
“But parquet floors,” she sighed.
“Parquet floors have a place and look beautiful when done properly and placed in the right setting.
“But for a lot of people it just doesn’t look good.”
Parquet floors are a type of wooden flooring that is made by laying tiles in a pattern to create a striking geometric design, which often looks like zigzags.
Julia said: “The pattern needs really big rooms and big ceilings and it has to be done to a really high quality to look fantastic.
‘So cheap laminate, oh, it just doesn’t look good. I’m sorry, I just don’t think it looks right. People will be mad at me, I know that.’
Banks
Next, Julia turned to the trusty leather sofa – and even the luxurious Chesterfields are not safe.
The interior design expert said: “I can’t do it, I don’t get it, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a leather sofa that I like.
“I can’t even get a Chesterfield, even a traditional one, on board.
“For me there’s no texture in it and we all know how much I love texture.”
She continued: “They really fall flat, they look like they should be in a business environment, they should be in an office or a doctor’s office or something.
“They just don’t give personality, they don’t give warmth.
“I know some people like them for their practical feel, so they are clean and washable.
“But nowadays you can get such amazing smart fabrics that I’m just a big no-no, especially armchairs, armchairs.
“A small subcategory of that is any couches that have a cup holder or a USB port. No, big no.”
Wall stickers
And finally, Julia urged parents to avoid stickers and wall stickers in the children’s room.
She said: “These might look like dinosaurs or planets or whatever it is.
“I just think they’re a real problem. I don’t think it equates to a well-designed space, I don’t think they’re that timeless.
“Your child may outgrow that pretty quickly and you’ll have to remove it and then repaint it.”
Offering an expert alternative, she suggested: “I think a much better way to decorate a child’s room, if you want to do something to the walls, is to opt for wallpaper, all over or even down to a picture frame much better way to do it.
“I just don’t like the stickers.”
Trends that interior designers hate
If you want to make your home look glamorous, here are the trends that interior designers can’t resist.
NO YELLOW: According to Bilal Rehman, yellow paint in a bedroom is a big no.
He said: “If you want everyone to know you’re a horse girl, then yellow is perfect for you.”
UNSUBSCRIBE: Kelly Hoppen shared her honest thoughts on Live, Love, Laugh signs.
The interior design professional explained: “Another negative of mine: Live, Laugh, Love – those kind of wooden things that are on bookshelves and floating shelves, that’s like 10, 12, 15 years ago.”
NO GRAY YES: Julie Provenzano explained that gray interiors are overdone.
She emphasized, “We took something good and we exaggerated it so much that it now feels copy-pasted and basic.”
