I’m an interior designer – an overstyling mistake can make your home look tacky
An interior designer gave her tips for a beautifully decorated home that doesn’t look overdone.
Her advice can transform your space from kitschy to super chic with a few simple adjustments.
Dagna Marszal is an interior designer at Beautiful chairs.
She talked about all the dos and don’ts to make a space look more elegant and sophisticated.
“We all love to fix up our homes and customize them to our own taste,” she said.
“While decorating a living room can enhance the space by adding character, sometimes over-decorating can lead to the opposite result of what we hoped for.”
AVOIDING COMMON MISTAKES
Marszal discussed the misstep that can put a damper on your space.
“Overstyling a chair is a common mistake that can affect the entire look of the room and even make it look cheap and tacky,” she says.
“If you put too many layers on the chair, such as throws and cushions, the piece of furniture can look cluttered and stuffy.
“This can make the chair look tacky, which affects the rest of the living room and makes the space look cheaper.”
She recommended an alternative approach to decorating to brighten up a room and make it more elegant.
“Instead, follow the ‘less is more’ approach by limiting the number of decorative accessories you use. This will create a minimalist look that makes the most of the chair’s features,” she says.
“When you dress the chair with a plaid, you can drape it over the armrest of the chair. This creates an expensive and elegant look without it being overwhelming.
“Adjust the bedspread accordingly, but make sure it does not touch the floor. This will create a stylish, refined look.”
Marszal also pays extra attention to the materials used in the furniture.
“Low-quality fabrics can diminish the luxurious look of your living room. This applies, for example, to the cushions that decorate chairs,” the researcher said.
“This can negatively affect the quality of the whole, making the chair and the rest of the room look cheap.
“Distressed fabrics and flat, worn cushions can also create a cheap, faded look.
“To avoid this, choose high-quality fabrics such as velvet or corduroy and ensure the cushion is nicely padded for a luxurious effect.”
The interior designer added that small style tweaks and statement pieces can make all the difference.
“Styling a chair the right way can have a huge impact on the look of your living room,” she says.
“A statement chair is a great way to enhance a space and add style and character to the room.
“If you are conscious about the accessories you use with the chair, you can change the entire atmosphere of the room from cheap to chic.”
