The lack of affordable housing in Canada has led to more and more people living in tents or informal shelters because they have nowhere else to go.

But with his “social project” – Tinytinyhomes.ca – Ryan hopes to produce the bike sheds to get the camp’s residents “mobile and away from the parks.”

The project has not yet secured funding and is currently in development phase.

The build cost Ryan around £2,800, but once completed it was a detached property.

There’s even a toilet, which is stored under the bed, as well as a microwave and a desk.

The sofa can be converted into a comfortable bed and there are solar panels on the roof, which provide him with electricity indoors.

The only thing the house doesn’t have is running water.

The average house price in Ontario, where Ryan lives, is around £1,100 per month for a similar amount including bills.

It is therefore not surprising that people want to investigate his concept further and even see if they qualify for one of the houses.

“I want one. Take my money,” wrote one.

“A place where you have peace and safety, and where you even have transportation to possible work opportunities.”

“It’s a minimalist life,” wrote someone else.

“That’s really cool!” shouted another enthusiastically.

“Damn. I like that!! Built it yourself??” someone else asked.

Frequently Asked Questions about Tiny Homes

The tiny house movement started in the United States and later became popular in the United Kingdom as well.

What is a tiny house?

Tiny houses are small, fully-equipped living spaces designed to facilitate a more sustainable, off-grid lifestyle. Though they vary in size and shape, tiny houses are typically between 150 and 500 square feet, made of sustainable materials, and are easier—and less expensive—to maintain than traditional brick and mortar homes.

Are tiny houses legal in the UK?

As long as the tiny house is no larger than 19.8m x 6.7m, it is defined as a caravan in UK law. Therefore, tiny houses are classed as legal additional dwelling accommodation.

Can you get a mortgage for a tiny house?

The small size and relatively low cost of tiny homes means that they are generally not eligible for a mortgage. However, there are plenty of options for getting a loan to finance your dreams of the perfect, portable home.

Others even pointed out how good the house’s ‘soundproofing’ was, noting that the traffic and general hustle and bustle immediately stopped once they were in the bike shed.

“Crazy setup,” someone wrote.

“Literally my dream,” agreed another.

As a third said: “Totally cool, man! You’re a winner in life!”
