NetflixThe newest hit series north of the North is based on a small town of 8,000 people in the north Canada Where temperatures reach ice -cold -49 degrees Fahrenheit and there are no roads.
The show follows a young woman and mother who reinvents herself while living in her little fictional Ice Cove in Nunavut, the same region Iqaluit is located.
The show was largely filmed in Iqaluit, the capital of Nunavut and a remote community full of Inuit, a native Arctic group.
“It’s a small community,” said Charlotte DeWolff, who owned Astro Theater and held a premiere for the show there, to DailyMail.com. ‘Everyone seems to know everyone.
“It’s a good place to raise a family,” she continued. ‘I really love the people … [And] I don’t mind cold weather. ‘
DeWolff lived in the small city from 1999 to 2020 after he had moved there for work. And although in her genes she has some arctic native native, she didn’t know when she lived there.
“The Inuit is very open and accepts,” said DeWolff, who still has an apartment in the city. She described the Inuit as a ‘friendliness’ for them and a ‘good sense of humor’.
And she believes that Netflix has depicted the community correctly – or at least their sense of humor.

“I think it was,” she said. “I identified myself with part of it.”
Iqaluit has a lot to do, such as swimming, hockey, football, dancing and a fitness center, although the Astro Theater, which shows great films, as well as those made by Intuit Creatives.
“You are five minutes away from everything,” DeWolff, who still visits often, told DailyMail.com.
She said that the only drawback of the remote city is the brittle cold, with temperatures that fall as low as negative as negative 49 degrees Fahrenheit. Despite the cold, it doesn’t get a terrible amount of snow or wind.
“It’s a dry cold,” said DeWolff. The place is often described as an ‘arctic desert’, she said.
Another setback is the inaccessibility to go to the country, which is only accessible to the air and is very expensive to travel.
To fly from Calgary in Alberta – where DeWolff now lives – to Iqaluit, it would cost at least $ 1500 and rarely a direct flight there. Similar to those who come from Ottawa or Ontario.

“It is a small community,” Charlotte DeWolff, who owns Astro Theater and held a premiere for the new Netflix series, to DailyMail.com. ‘Everyone seems to know everyone’
“The entire territory is so proud of this,” Dewolff said about the Netflix show. “The entire community supports it.”
Many of the community worked as extras in the background of the north of the North.
Series maker Alethea Arnaquq-Baril, who lives in Iqaluit, told Broadview: ‘Our city is fictional, and we have consciously chosen that because we wanted to take the best parts of small, small cities and the best parts of Iqaluit, the big city.
“And something that we like about life in Iqaluit is that it really is a diverse community,” she went on. “We wanted our fictional city to have that atmosphere where there is inuit from the western Arctic area, Inuit from the eastern North Pole area.”
The beautiful region is full of snowy mountains and large pieces of bare land, only interrupted by small villages with brightly colored houses.
Iqaluit is the northernmost part of Canada and film team took the small town between March and June 2024.
The makers wanted to use the area to show the Inuit and their lifestyle, of which DeWolff said the community made it very happy.
‘The community likes to do it, we like to host [film crews]”She said.

The makers of the show also come from Iqaluit, although they have mentioned the city cover in the show (photo). Iqaluit is the northernmost part of Canada and film teams took the small town between March and June 2024
“They like to see their culture on the screen.”
Various local places appear during the show, including the Curling Club and the Discovery Hotel.
Even the main character’s house can be found at the end of a dead end street in the Tundra Valley of the city, according to The Nunatsiaq -Nieuws.
The city shot known in 1995 when it became the capital of the new Territorium Nunavut via a referendum in 2016.
This gave the Inuit people control over their community and institutions.
After they became the capital, people began to flood the area, increasing the population of 3,000 today to around 8,000.
“It’s a government city,” said DeWolff.

And although the majority of the residents are inuit, there are those from the southern regions of Canada, which mainly come to work for the government, she said.
Since living there, DeWolff has seen the area grow and she said proudly of its performance.
‘[It’s] So good to see what it has achieved, “she told DailyMail.com.
