Released British Hamas hostage Emily Damari's defiant hand gesture has already become a meme, and one well-wisher even had it tattooed on his calf.

In an inspiring video on X/Twitter, Jewish author Hen Mazzig showed a clip of a person getting tattooed just a day after Damari was released from 470 days of captivity.

The clip moves from the man's leg to an iPad screen showing the outline of his new tattoo: Damari's raised, bandaged hand shows her two missing fingers.

He captioned the post: “Emily Damari is officially an icon of resilience in Israel.”

According to the Hostage and Missing Families Forum, the 28-year-old British-Israeli hostage lost two fingers after being shot in the hand on October 7.

She also suffered shrapnel wounds to her leg when she was snatched from the kibbutz village of Kfar Aza.

Yesterday, Damari was one of three women released as part of a ceasefire deal with Israel, with an international Red Cross convoy picking up the trio from Hamas.

The ceasefire was postponed yesterday morning when the terrorist group failed to hand over the list of names 24 hours in advance as stated as part of the agreement.

Today, Damari broke her silence to say she is the “happiest person in the world” since being freed from Hamas captivity in Gaza.

'Love, love, love. Thank God. Thank you to my family, to Orali, to the best friends I have in this world,” she said in a post on Instagram. “I returned to my beloved life.”

“I only got a glimpse of everything and you broke my heart with excitement. Thank you, thank you, the happiest person in the world, just for being.”

At the end of her message, she added a “rock on” emoji, symbolizing the two fingers she lost during the Hamas attack.

Rotem Koren, a friend of Damari, told the Mail: 'After October 7 it was very difficult to rebuild these feelings, so yesterday was a very emotional moment.

“I think most of the world has seen Emily's strength. Even in the most difficult moments, while all these terrorists keep laughing – she is so powerful.

'That was a very emotional moment for us to see that. When she got out of the terrorist's car, or when she whistled at us in the hospital, you could see there that nothing can stop her.

'You saw how she saw the positive side even in her situation. Even after losing two fingers, she turned it into something positive – the first thing she does is share this sticker of her hand.

'Now everyone draws strength from that. I hope everyone can adopt these skills that she has, to hold yourself together and look at the positive no matter what.”

Friend Guy Yakobi, 29, added: 'It was great to see her and hear her voice again. It was a quick meeting, we didn't have much time to talk. It was just a hug and a kiss and telling her I love her'.

On becoming a symbol of resistance: “If anyone can survive and come back smiling, it's Emily.

“We weren't surprised to see how she behaved.”

Emily spent most of her time in captivity with Romi Gonen, who was released with her.

Romi spoke on Sunday about how the British-Israeli woman helped her keep her spirits up during her captivity.

Yesterday it emerged that Romi, a trained paramedic, helped care for Emily's injured hand during their captivity.

'She helped Emily with her injury after she had not received any real treatment from Hamas. She has never had a visit from the Red Cross,” says a family friend.

Mandy Damari, her mother, shared a statement today thanking the “many people” who she said “played a role in bringing Emily home” and expressing their support.

“Yesterday I was finally able to give Emily the hug I dreamed of,” she said.

“I am relieved to report that Emily is doing much better after her release than we could ever have expected. I'm also glad that the world got a glimpse of her feisty and charismatic personality during her release.

'In Emily's own words, she is the happiest girl in the world; she has her life back.

“At this incredibly happy moment for our family, we must also remember that there are 94 other hostages. The ceasefire must continue and every last hostage must be returned to their families.

“As wonderful as it is to see Emily's resilience, it's still early days. As you saw yesterday, Emily lost two fingers on her left hand.

“She now needs time with her loved ones and her doctors as she begins her road to recovery.”

About 33 hostages will be released under the terms of the first phase of the three-part ceasefire.

But on the first day of the ceasefire, only three hostages were released, and on the seventh day four more had to be returned.

Then, three hostages are released every week for four weeks. Finally, in the sixth week of phase one, fourteen hostages will be returned.
