Vice President Kamala Harris was humiliated for the last time on Monday when her campaign rival Donald Trump was inaugurated as president of the United States.
Harris arrived at the ceremony on Capitol Hill wearing a black pantsuit with visible zippers and did not smile as she entered with President Joe Biden.
She and Biden took part in a long tradition of the outgoing US president attending the inauguration of the new president as a sign of unity and respect for the democratic process.
Harris sat stoically throughout the ceremony with an inauguration program on her lap.
She smiled sadly as Trump was introduced and looked at the floor as she straightened her hair as he prepared to take the oath of office.
Then she applauded lightly after Trump took his oath of office.
Harris, who was endorsed by Biden in late June to take over as Democratic presidential nominee, campaigned against Trump for 106 days but fell short in the election.
In his speech, Trump called the 2024 election the “greatest and most consequential election in the history of our country,” reminding everyone in attendance that he defeated Harris in all seven swing states.
He added that he won the popular vote by “millions.”

Her husband Doug Emhoff couldn't keep his composure when Trump promised to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.
He grimaced and shook his head slightly in response as Trump outlined the return to a clear destiny for the United States of America.

Harris smiled briefly as the music broke before singer Carrie Underwood's performance of God Bless America.
At one point, she even sang along softly during the song, even as critics on social media accused her of not knowing all the words.
Harris and Emhoff left the Capitol as the former vice president and the second briefly shook hands with Trump before bidding the Bidens farewell.
Harris left Capitol Hill Monday afternoon with plans to return to her home in California after the opening ceremony.
