King Charles personally congratulated President Donald Trump on his inauguration, praising the special relationship between Britain and the US.

The monarch's personal words were sent to Trump to congratulate him on his second swearing-in as US president, Buckingham Palace has revealed.

It is understood that all options remain possible for an upcoming state visit by Mr Trump to Britain and a visit by Charles to the US, but no plans are currently on the agenda.

Foreign monarchs, presidents or prime ministers are invited to visit the king on the advice and request of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, with the decision being up to the government.

With the Republican politician making the most dramatic comeback in American political history, Charles and Trump are expected to meet in person again during Trump 2.0, as his second term is being dubbed.

Trump is known for his love of the monarchy and the royal family plays a central role in Britain's relationship with the US.

The US leader boasted that he had “automatic chemistry” with the late queen, calling the king a “really great guy.”

In a new interview, Reform UK leader Nigel Farage called Mr Trump “the most pro-British president since Eisenhower” and spoke of his love for the royal family.

The president-elect, dressed in a suit and dark red tie, shook his fist at photographers as he stepped out of the crowd. Melania, in a navy blue suit and matching hat with white trim, stood next to him. Their son Barron walked with them.

Farage said: “Trump came to Scotland a lot as a teenager and spent a lot of time there. He has his investments there, loves the royal family – I mean on a level you can't even believe. This is a very, very, very, very Anglophile president.”

Donald Trump, along with his wife Melania, son Barron and his family, kicked off the ceremonies for his historic second inauguration during a church service on Monday.

The president-elect took the front row of St. John's Episcopal Church — just steps from the White House — and smiled at Vance, who sat next to his wife, Usha.
