A Border Patrol agent was shot dead near the U.S.-Canada border just hours after President Donald Trump's inauguration.
The officer was shot Monday around 3:15 p.m. in Newport, Vermont, while conducting a traffic stop, authorities said.
Police have reportedly identified two suspects, one of whom was shot dead, Fox said.
The incident led to the immediate closure of portions of Interstate 91 as authorities launched an investigation.
The FBI is assisting in the investigation and motorists have been warned to take another route.
It comes just hours after President Trump returned to the White House following a hardline campaign in which he vowed to deport migrants entering the US.
On the first day of his presidency, Trump began signing a slew of executive orders, 10 of which dealt with the southern border and the illegal immigration crisis.
The number of immediate actions underlines the importance of immigration policy for Trump's second term.

It comes just hours after President Trump returned to the White House thanks to a hardline campaign in which he vowed to deport migrants entering the US.

Trump is also ending catch-and-release, a policy that allows illegal border crossers seeking asylum to be detained and then released into the country pending a court date.
He reinstates the Remain in Mexico policy, which leaves illegal border hoppers waiting in the last country they came from, usually Mexico, while they wait for a court date to make their asylum claims.
The major border city of El Paso, Texas, temporarily closed its border crossings on Monday around Trump's swearing-in ceremony.
Authorities in riot gear with shields and full body armor were photographed standing guard at border crossings.
