Alarming study discovers deadly risk of being a child of divorced parents

If you have parents who divorced when you were a child, this can increase your risk of stroke.

A study shows that older people who were children of divorce are about 60 percent more likely to have a stroke than people of the same age whose parents stayed together.

Researchers looked at 13,205 people aged 65 and over and found that one in nine whose parents divorced when they were children had had a stroke.

The long-term stress of dealing with arguing and tense parents, and perhaps moving to a new home or school after their divorce, could have a long-lasting effect on health, the study authors suggest.

Professor Esme Fuller-Thomson, senior author of the study from the University of Toronto, said: 'We don't know why people whose parents divorced when they were children are more likely to have strokes, but it could be that stress influences has on their sleep quality.

'There is evidence that sleep disruption in childhood can cause people to develop insomnia later in life, and that this can increase the risk of stroke.

'The long-term stress of your parents' divorce can also permanently alter the body's response to stress, producing increased levels of stress hormones such as cortisol, which can cause inflammation in the body and increase the risk of stroke.

“However, our study focused on older adults born in the 1950s or earlier, when divorce was rare and highly stigmatized.”

Experts say the stress of watching parents argue and possible sleep deprivation could put separated children at greater risk of stroke.

In Britain, someone has a stroke every five minutes, affecting 100,000 people a year, while there are a total of 1.3 million stroke survivors.

The new study, published in the journal PLOS One, looked at data from older people in the US who were surveyed about their health and lifestyle in 2022 and asked whether they had had a stroke.

Of those whose parents divorced before age 18, 11.2 percent reported having had a stroke.

That compared to just 7.5 percent of those whose parents had stayed together.

The researchers took into account other factors that could increase the risk of stroke, including smoking and being physically inactive.

They also removed people who were victims of child abuse from the analysis so they could be sure it was a divorce and not more traumatic family issues linked to a greater risk of stroke.

Taking all these factors into account, the study found that people whose parents divorced during childhood were 61 percent more likely to have a stroke.

Both men and women had a similar increased risk.

Symptoms of a stroke are commonly remembered by this four-letter acronym, FAST. Stroke patients may often have their faces droop to one side, have difficulty lifting both arms and may have slurred speech, while time is of the essence as immediate treatment of a transient ischemic attack (TIA) or minor stroke can significantly reduce the risk of stroke. a much deadlier major stroke

Interestingly, the higher risk of stroke from being a divorced child was similar to the higher risk in people with diabetes – a disease that damages blood vessels, increasing the risk of a blood clot that can cause a stroke .

People with diabetes were only 37 percent more likely to have a stroke than people without the condition.

The 11.2 percent of divorced children who had a stroke was higher than the 10.7 percent among people who were divorced themselves or separated from their partners.

The research states: 'Parent divorce is a source of significant stress for many children, as evidenced by higher levels of emotional and behavioral disruption and poorer mental health.'

But researchers point out that the reduced stigma attached to divorce may mean that a link with stroke is less clear in younger generations.
