I’m a relationship counsellor… here is what a healthy relationship REALLY looks like

No relationship is perfect, but one relationship counselor shared the beneficial qualities she's noticed in healthy relationships.

In a thread on X, formerly known as Twitter, Comfort Omovre, a certified counselor, shared the 15 things people in a healthy and happy relationship possess.

The Canada-based expert was the first to mention that they had a “resounding, frequent and sincere appreciation” for each other.

“I've found this to be common in every successful relationship I've had the pleasure of witnessing, including my own. Successful couples talk about how much they appreciate each other, often express gratitude for the big and especially small things, and they always mean it when they say 'Thank you,'” she said.

She then mentions having habitual loving gestures as an important factor, explaining that successful couples always “assure each other of their affection through healthy, non-sexual physical contact.”

The next qualities are having respect and admiration for each other and setting healthy boundaries.

“They understand that boundaries can be a tool to promote the health of relationships because it is more about maintaining each other's individuality and nurturing safe spaces, rather than creating separation,” she explained.

Comfort also noted that healthy couples never fight “dirty” and do not try to intentionally hurt the other.

“They have mastered the art of healthy conflict resolution and as such, every misunderstanding brings them closer together,” she wrote.

The relationship expert then added 'recognition of each other's autonomy' and 'effective communication', as shown by the next two qualities.

'[They] listen actively,” Comfort explained. '[By] creating safe spaces to address both mundane and difficult issues with care and gentleness, rather than passive aggressiveness, anger or simply silent treatment.”

Another tip the expert recommended was to be “real” friends with your partner.

“They act silly, play games, tease and laugh a lot together,” she said. “If they weren't in love, they would most likely still be friends.”

Comfort added that couples who got the distance also never stop dating, and continue to surprise and romance each other.

'The flame of romance is one that never goes out. It may get a little darker at times, but they will always make it dazzling again,” she said.

Her next tips are to always consider your partner and always try to improve their sex life.

Comfort's latest tips include finding a balance between agreement and healthy compromise, reassuring people that it's normal for couples to not agree on everything – but adding that they should make a point of healthy compromise can achieve.

She then urged couples to apologize appropriately, forgive sincerely and “give in” to each other.

“Both parties consistently do what they can to carry their weight in the relationship and, if necessary, the other's as well,” she advised.

“I think the question you should be asking yourself now is, 'Am I in a successful relationship?'” she wrote, concluding the long conversation.

“Especially if you and your partner are in a long-term relationship, because what determines the success of a relationship is not only its longevity, but above all its content,” she said.

The thread went viral online, with users praising the counselor for her wise words.

“I read everything and it gives me the certainty that my partner and I do indeed have a successful relationship,” wrote one enthusiastic person.

'I took extensive notes. I appreciate the guidance,” said another.
