A Sky News reporter broke down in tears live as he read disturbing details of the sentencing hearing for Southport murdered Axel Rudakubana.

Sarah Jane Mee was relaying details provided by her colleagues from Liverpool Crown Court when she paused and said she wanted to 'just catch her breath'.

Mee had interviewed Tawhid Islam, director of the Liverpool Muslim Council, about the importance of communities coming together.

She then started talking about the evidence given in court about the attack during a Taylor Swift-themed class at The Hart Space in Southport, Merseyside, last July.

Mee told viewers: 'Please be patient as we have a live blog running, SkyNews.com, we are not allowed into the courtroom with cameras until the sentencing has been handed down so my colleagues are inside giving us the details of what is happening

'I just have to warn you that what I am about to tell you is truly distressing, as you would expect from this case. This is prosecutor Deanna Heer KC as she continues to describe the July attack.

“She says businessman Jonathan Hayes, a Hart Space office building, approached Rudakubana, who lunged with a knife as he tried to grab the gun. Hayes was stabbed in the leg and fell to the ground, screaming for help.

'The court further heard that window cleaners driving past saw class teacher Leanne Lucas covered in blood as she screamed that someone was stabbing the children.

Sarah Jane Mee had today interviewed Tawhid Islam, director of the Liverpool Muslim Council, as she passed evidence given at Liverpool Crown Court and broke down in tears.

'One entered the building but retreated when he saw Rudakubana standing at the top of the stairs with a knife in his hand. At the top of the stairs, they found the attacker standing over Bebe King's body, holding a kitchen knife.

Who is Sky News host Sarah Jane Mee?

Sarah Jane Mee presents Sky News' UK Tonight show on weeknights at 8pm, having previously presented Breakfast and The Sarah-Jane Mee show.

The 46-year-old has also worked for ITV and Sky Sports and presented on radio including Heart, BBC 5Live, LBC and Virgin Radio.

Mee and her team won a Royal Television Society award for their reporting on the 2016 terror attack in Brussels.

She is married to Ben Richardson and they had a daughter named Rae Brenda Richardson, born in June 2020.

Mee is also stepmother to Mr Richardson's son Teddy from a previous relationship.

'One of the window cleaners picked her up and carried her out of the building, shouting about the extent of her injuries. The court heard that police arrived at the scene to find people in panic.'

Mee then started tearing out of the camera as she said, “Ah, just take a breath after that.”

Then there was a pause as she calmed herself down, and she continued, “Okay, um Tarwin, sorry, it's just so disturbing isn't it.”

He agreed: “It really is.”

Mee then continued, “Look, we're here for those girls and the families, so try not to get angry because it's such an important day for them and this is a horror that came to their door.”

The full horror of the 'sadistic' murders of the three children was outlined in court today.

The court was told the 18-year-old said: 'I'm glad they're dead' as he was held in a custody room after killing the three girls during dance class.

Prosecutors said the injuries suffered by the Southport murder victims were “difficult to explain as anything other than sadistic in nature.”

Alice da Silva Aguiar, nine, Bebe King, six, and Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, died shortly before midday on July 29 after the attack on a small business park in the seaside town.

The defendant, who was 17 at the time of the murders, admitted their murders, as well as the attempted murders of eight other children, who cannot be named for legal reasons, Ms Lucas and Mr Hayes.

The judge, Mr Justice Goose, ordered Rudakubana to leave the dock shortly after the start of the hearing, shouting repeatedly.

One family member shouted “coward,” while others shook their heads as he left.

Rudakubana had shouted, “It's not my fault, I feel sick,” and repeatedly called for a paramedic.

The court ruled that Rudakubana's murders were a “premeditated, planned knife attack on multiple victims, mainly young girls, with the intent to kill them.”

When the judge tried to continue the case, Rudakubana shouted, “Do not proceed.”

Gruesome CCTV footage was shown to the court, including footage showing a child trying to leave the building but being pulled back in.

There were gasps and gasps from the public gallery as the girl was seen re-emerging and collapsing on the ground outside.

A woman in the public gallery covered her face and cried, being comforted by those sitting next to her as the video played.

Family members were given the option to leave the court before the CCTV footage was played, but all remained in the court.

More than 30 relatives of the victims were in the court's public gallery for the sentencing and the court heard others were in an outbuilding.
