The nominations for the Academy Awards were announced on Thursday morning.

Some very big names were left off the list, shocking fans.

The best was Selena Gomez, who played the role of the unhinged wife of a Mexican drug lord who acts desperately after she thinks her husband has died, even though her song Mi Camino was nominated.

Instead, her co-star Zoe Saldana was nominated for her role as a lawyer who helps a man become a woman. And Karla Sofía Gascón, the leading actor, was also nominated.

Angelina Jolie was not nominated for the role of opera singer Maria Callas in Maria.

Nicole Kidman didn't get any Oscar love for her performance in Babygirl. She played Romy Mathis, a married CEO of a tech company who begins an affair with a young intern (Harris Dickinson).

Pamela Anderson didn't get a nod for her impressive turn as a Las Vegas performer in The Last Showgirl.

Also ignored was Stanley Tucci, who was overlooked for Best Supporting Actor for his powerful performance in Conclave.

The nominations were originally scheduled to be announced on January 17, but voting was extended by a week due to the LA fires.

The awards ceremony will take place as planned on March 2 at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, with Conan O'Brien taking on hosting duties for the first time.

Hollywood's awards season came to a virtual standstill as wildfires disrupted life and work in the Los Angeles area. There were near-daily updates from the Hollywood guilds and awards show organizations as the industry navigated the crisis and its fallout.

But as of now, here are the dates of major upcoming awards shows, from the Oscars to the Grammys.

The sheer scale of the destruction in Southern California quickly put an end to any festivities in the film industry's peak season of celebrations.

The fires have struck the core of a film industry still trying to stabilize itself after years of pandemic, labor unrest and technological upheaval. Not for the first time this decade, the Oscars are confronted with the question: should the show go on? And if so, what do they mean now?

The Oscars will remain as planned, but it is certain that they will be transformed as a result of the bushfires, and most of the red carpet splendor that stretches between now and then will be shortened or even canceled altogether. With so many left without homes by the fires, there is little appetite for the usual self-congratulatory parades of the season.

The focus has instead shifted to what the Oscars might symbolize for a traumatized Los Angeles. The Oscars have never meant less, but at the same time they are perhaps more important than ever as a beacon of perseverance for the faltering film capital.

Two very daring films shown earlier this month — Brady Corbet's 215-minute postwar epic “The Brutalist” and Jacques Audiard's Spanish-language, genre-bending musical “Emilia Perez” — won top honors at the 82nd Golden Globes.

'The Brutalist' was crowned best drama film, putting one of the most ambitious films of 2024 on track to become a top contender at the Academy Awards. The film, shot in VistaVision and released on hiatus, also won best director for Corbet and best actor for Adrien Brody. In his acceptance speech, Corbet spoke about filmmakers who need approval for the final version.

“Emilia Pérez” won best picture, comedy or musical, boosting the Oscar chances of Netflix's top contender. It also won Best Supporting Actress for Zoe Saldaña, Best Song (“El Mal”) and Best Foreign Language Film. Audiard, the French director, made way for Karla Sofía Gascón, the film's transgender star who plays a Mexican drug lord who undergoes gender-affirming surgery, to speak on behalf of the film.

The big event and awards season finale in Hollywood will go ahead as planned on March 2.

The Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, where the show takes place, was briefly endangered by the Sunset Fire, although the blaze was quickly extinguished. The film academy has postponed the Scientific and Technical Awards until February 18 (a new date has not yet been announced) and completely canceled the annual luncheon for nominees, a non-televised mainstay of the social calendar known for its mingling and 'class photo' '.

The Oscars will be broadcast live on ABC, hosted by Conan O'Brien.

Actors Bowen Yang and Rachel Sennott presented the announcement.

The show will be available to stream on Oscars.com, Oscars.org and on the Academy's social media platforms. It will also stream on ABC, Hulu and Disney+.
