Passengers warned ‘do not travel’ as Storm Eowyn set to wreak major travel chaos with 90mph winds

Train passengers face chaos tomorrow as Storm Eowyn hits Britain, with five train operators issuing 'do not travel' warnings ahead of a major network closure.

LNER, Avanti West Coast, TransPennine Express, Northern and Lumo have all told passengers they will not be allowed to use services on parts of their routes tomorrow.

National Rail added that CrossCountry, ScotRail and Transport for Wales are also advising on potential disruptions – while other operators could be added to the list.

Widespread travel disruption is expected as Britain braces for 90mph winds, heavy rain and heavy snow as the storm is set to hit from midnight tonight.

A yellow weather warning for wind is in force for the south coast of England, parts of the south west and much of the Welsh coast today from 7am to 6pm.

But forecasters predict the toughest conditions will occur tomorrow, when the whole of Britain faces at least one warning for snow, wind or rain.

This is how Storm Eowyn is expected to hit trains tomorrow:

Passengers warned ‘do not travel’ as Storm Eowyn set to wreak major travel chaos with 90mph winds

Last month a Northern Rail train crossed the Ribblehead Viaduct in the Yorkshire Dales on the Settle-Carlisle line, one of the trains under a 'do not travel' warning for tomorrow

LNER

Travelers could be stranded in the north of England as LNER has warned that no trains will run in either direction north of Newcastle from 11am tomorrow.

The operator said people are 'strongly advised not to travel to North York if at all possible' as 'services will be subject to cancellation at short notice and significant delays'.

It added: 'Alternative travel options will also be limited due to the nature of the weather.'

Those with an LNER ticket with tomorrow's date can instead use this at no extra cost on another service operated by the company today or on another day up to and including Monday.

However, there are no direct connections to or from London King's Cross this weekend due to previously planned work between Peterborough and the capital.

AVANTI WEST COAST

Avanti West Coast said the storm will 'severely disrupt' its services tomorrow, with passengers advised 'not to travel north of Preston or on the North Wales route'.

Anyone needing to travel on these routes tomorrow should instead use their ticket on any Avanti service via the same route from today until the end of service on Sunday.

The company said: 'We are asking customers not to travel north of Preston or between Chester and Holyhead on January 24 due to expected disruption from Storm Éowyn.'

NORTHERN

The storm is expected to affect several routes on the northern network tomorrow, with the operator 'advising customers to avoid travel where possible'.

It added: If you choose to travel, please ensure you check before traveling as trains may be canceled at very short notice and onward connection may not be possible.

'Try not to rely on the last services of the day as these may be canceled and bad weather may limit road transport.'

Northern is telling passengers to 'not travel' on the following routes, meaning no trains or replacement bus services will be available.

  • Oxenholme to Windermere (Windermere branch)
  • Barrow – Carlisle (Cumbrian Coast)
  • Settel-Carlisle
  • Barrow/Windermere-Manchester Airport
  • Carlisle – Barrow/Lancaster
  • Morecambe Heysham Harbor – Lancaster
  • Blackpool North to York (Bradford to Blackpool)
  • Wigan to Leeds
  • Manchester Victoria-Leeds
  • Huddersfield – Sheffield (Penistone Line)
  • Hebden Bridge – Halifax (Calder Valley)
  • Leeds-Nottingham
  • Newcastle-Carlisle
  • Ashington – Newcastle (Northumberland line)

Northern also said 'we strongly advise you not to travel' on other routes as there will be 'major gaps in service or the route will only be partially served':

  • Leeds – Lincoln (only operates between Sheffield and Lincoln)
  • Sheffield – Scarborough (only operates between Hull and Scarborough)
  • York – Bridlington (only operates between Hull and Bridlington)
  • Leeds Knottingley
  • York – Blackpool North (only operates between Bradford Interchange – York)
  • Leeds-Harrogate
  • Leeds – Chester (will operate between Chester and Manchester Victoria)

TRANSPENNINE EXPRESS

Customers using TransPennine Express have been told they will not travel tomorrow between Liverpool, Manchester and Scotland, and between York, Newcastle and Edinburgh.

The operator added: 'Services that do operate on the remainder of the TransPennine Express network will operate on an amended timetable and may be subject to significant disruption, with delays, changes and cancellations possible at short notice.'

Tickets for TransPennine Express journeys, including any connections with a tomorrow date, are valid from today until Monday at no extra cost.

LUMO

Lumo, which operates services on the East Coast Main Line, said the weather will 'severely disrupt' trains between Edinburgh and London Kings Cross.

The route between Newcastle and Edinburgh will be closed tomorrow for safety reasons, with the operator saying: 'You will therefore not be able to travel between these stations as there are no alternative travel arrangements in place.'

Tickets for tomorrow's Lumo services can only be used today or Monday at no additional cost on any Lumo service.

The operator added that customers will not be able to travel south of Newcastle this weekend due to construction between Peterborough and London King's Cross.
