A young boy was attacked by a shark while playing in shallow water.

Paramedics rushed to Shipwreck Cove in Golden Bay, north of Mandurah in WA, just after 5pm on Thursday after receiving reports that a child had been bitten.

The boy, believed to be 12 years old, suffered a small shark bite to his lower body while playing in the shallow waters of the family-friendly beach.

He was rushed to Rockingham General Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The boy is stable and is expected to be discharged on Friday.

The Ministry of Regional Industry and Development confirmed in a statement that “a young man was bitten by a suspected shark of unknown size and species at approximately 5.11pm.”

Swimmers are urged to exercise caution in Shipwreck Cove and Golden Bay.

There's more to come.
