My week in HMP Benidorm: Brit goes viral with hilarious account of his stay at prison-like Spanish hotel

A man's hilarious video account of the unglamorous accommodation he found for himself in British tourist mecca Benidorm has been viewed thousands of times online.

His experience in a dingy Costa Blanca apartment that promises families, “sun terraces, a rooftop pool, gym, hot tub and sauna,” consisted of broken blinds, cramped rooms and interior balconies reminiscent of one of the lesser healthy prisons of Europe.

The TikToker had booked himself into the hotel, Apartamentos Avenida, which he called 'HMP Benidorm'.

For a one-bedroom apartment it costs around £50 per night in winter and rises to £116 in August, when families flock in for their summer holidays. It is advertised on Booking.com as 'great for families with small children' and 'comfortable'.

In the video, he showed the entrance, with parallel white interior balconies with metal bars covering the rooms, reminiscent of a prison wing.

He filmed guests standing on the interior balconies and jokingly asking “what are you in jail for?”

One man replied 'because he was using a Fire Stick and watching football.'

The influencer, who calls himself Grumet and has 316,000 followers, jokingly sighed: “The system is a joke.”

The video also included his dimly lit room, which he called a “cell,” with broken blinds, a “47-year-old” landline and no view of the “old city.”

He also claimed that he had a panic alarm in his room, which he set off to set off an apparent alarm throughout the building. It is unclear whether the alarm was real.

Grumet said: 'I wouldn't stay here again. I haven't been to prison, but I have seen TV shows and this was no different.

'The landing was the most striking. As soon as I saw it, I said this is not an apartment, but a prison.

'I nicknamed it HMP Benidorm.

'I mean, it's not a bad place to stay if you have a room with a view of Benidorm's old town; it would be ideal.

“But ours was so bad. We literally see a prison wall.'
