Tom Brady has appointed Pete Carroll as head coach of Las Vegas Raiders.
The 73-year-old has signed a three-year contract with an option for a fourth season, says Adam Schefter of ESPN.
Brady was said to be eager to name the former Detroit Lions-head coach Ben Johnson, but Johnson finally chose to take over at the Chicago Bears.
Carroll did not have any coaching in the NFL for a year after he had left his role at the Seattle Seahawks, but worked as an adviser at the franchise.
Carroll won the Super Bowl 2013 with the Seahawks – they defeated the Denver Broncos 43-8 in the Metlife Stadium. It remains the only super bowl in their history.
He will be the oldest coach in the NFL next season and will be 74 in September. He inherits a team that has endured a terrible campaign among his predecessor Antonio Pierce, who was fired by Brady after a season of 4-13 in Vegas.
