An earthquake off the coast of Maine has shaken apartments all the way to Boston, Massachusetts, residents say.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) website, the magnitude 4.1 earthquake shook the Pine Tree State at 10:22 a.m. Monday.

Boston residents at least 60 miles south of the danger zone said they felt the rumbling. “The whole apartment just shook – Boston earthquake?” a concerned local wrote to X at 10:24 am.

“Yeah, I just felt it,” another Bostonian agreed, while a resident of Quincy, a city even further south, said their apartment also shook.

The earthquake's epicenter was in the Gulf of Maine, between four and eight miles southeast of York Harbor, according to the USGS website.

People in the neighboring state of New Hampshire also felt the tremors. “OMG New Hampshire just had a very noticeable earthquake!” one person wrote on X.

“Usually it happens when I'm sleeping or it's nothing noticeable, but everyone on my teams across NH and Southern Maine felt it, it was pretty strong and it lasted a good minute!”

Earthquakes on the East Coast are relatively rare, but are usually felt over longer distances, according to USGS.

“Moderately damaging earthquakes occur somewhere in the region every few decades,” the website reads.

'Earthquakes in the central and eastern US, although less common than in the western US, are usually felt over a much broader region.

“East of the Rockies, an earthquake could be felt in an area as much as ten times the size of an earthquake of comparable magnitude on the West Coast.”

A magnitude 4 earthquake, like the one in Maine, “is typically felt in many places up to 100 km (60 miles) from where it occurred,” according to the USGS.
