British holidaymaker, 60, dies after being swept into the sea at Tenerife rock pool

A British holiday maker died after being swept into the sea through a wave in a landmarkt of course in Tenerife.

The 60-year-old was one of three people who came in difficulties in the drama in Los Gigantes Natural swimming pool in the west of the island.

A rescue helicopter was mobilized together with the police, firefighters and medical care providers.

The man was found with the face down in the sea and was flown to a nearby football field, but the attempts to breathe new life into him after Rescue Teams discovered that he had gone into a cardiac arrest turned out not to be successful.

The other two people fell into the sea, both women, managed to achieve safety themselves.

One was brought to a health center with minor injuries and the other treated for a panic attack.

It was not immediately clear this morning whether the survivors were relatives or friends of the man who died and what their nationality was.

The police could not be reached early this morning to comment on local reports that describe the victim as a British holiday maker.

The tragedy took place just before noon yesterday in the Los Gigantes Natural Pool in the municipality of Santiago del Teide, also known as Crab Island Pool and near the four -star Barcelo Santiago Hotel.

Although a concrete wall protects swimmers, online warnings for travel locations advise tourists to stay out of the pool when ocean waves are high because they can rinse back.

Local officials have chatted on people in the Canary Islands to take care of the sea this week because of the strong swell and heavy waves.

A spokesperson for a regional emergency aid coordination center run by the government, with details about yesterday's operation, confirmed: 'Emergency services intervened in saving three people who had received in the sea in the sea.

'It happened near the natural pool of Crab Island in the municipality of Santiago del Teide.

'The alarm was raised just before noon yesterday, when we were told that three people had been swept into the sea by a wave.

'A man of 60 years died. He was found with his face down in the water and saved by the helicopter and taken to a nearby football field.

“It was confirmed that he was still in a cardiac arrest when the helicopter touched and the efforts to breathe new life into him and save his life turned out not to be successful.

'A 50-year-old woman was initially transferred to a nearby health center. She had slight injuries to her lower limbs.

“She and another woman who suffered a panic attack, but did not have to be taken to the hospital to get out of the water herself.”
