David Lammy and his new American counterpart Marco Rubio have promised to 'work together' – but avoided the deal of the Chagos Islands in their first phone call.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and the incoming State Secretary would have dealt with a series of issues, including the Indo-Pacific, Ukraine and the Middle East.

The potential transfer of the British territory – which houses the vital American base on Diego Garcia – was apparently not mentioned as Mauritius.

The conversation came after Keir Starmer and Donald Trump spoke on the phone for the first time since the President returned the White House.

The leaders also seemed to avoid flash points, with rates and defense expenditure that are not increased.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement that the two men had discussed their shared ties with the Caribbean. The Minister of Foreign Affairs has family ties with the family ties of Guyana and Mr Rubio to Cuba.

'They both welcomed the opportunity for the UK and the US to collaborate in coordination to meet shared challenges, including the situation in the Middle East, the illegal war of Russia in Ukraine, the challenges of China and the need for Indo-Pacific Security, “The statement said.

Spokeswoman Tammy Bruce of the US Department of Foreign Affairs Tammy Bruce said that the two men had discussed 'a series of urgent global problems'.

“Both leaders expressed eagerness to work immediately to promote our many shared objectives for foreign policy,” she said.

'They confirmed the depth of the special relationship between the US and the crucial nature of our partnership in tackling issues such as the conflict in the Middle East, the Russian war against Ukraine and the malignant influence of China.

“They also entered joint initiatives, including the Aukus Partnership, which promotes a free and open Indo-Pacific that is safe and stable.”

Despite the reference to shared initiatives, the deal of the Chagos Islands was not explicitly mentioned in the call, according to both the American and the British accounts of the discussion.

The Biden administration had signed the agreement by the Labor Government, which could see British Hand Mauritius £ 90 million a year to lease the military base back in the coming 99 years.

However, members of Mr. Trump's team, including Mr Rubio, have expressed concern about the deal.

Mr. Lammy is one of the senior British government figures who have been very critical of the returning president in the past.

In 2017, when he was a member of parliament, he described Mr Trump as a “racist and KKK/Neo-Nazi sympathizant.”

He played the Jibes and insisted that he can forge warm ties with the American government.
