Australian soldier Oscar Jenkins is supposed to be alive and in Russian imprisonment after reports that he was executed after being captured during the fighting for Ukraine.
The ambassador of Ukraine in Australia said that the Foreign Affairs and Trade Officers department told him on Wednesday that Jenkins was still alive, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.
“I am very happy that he lives, it's fantastic news,” said Vasyl Myroshnychenko.
Jenkins, a 32-year-old teacher from Melbourne, had traveled to the war zone and served alongside the army of Ukraine when he was trapped by Russian soldiers at the end of last year.
On January 15, Anthony Albanese promised to take the 'strongest action' against Russia if it was confirmed that Jenkins died since he was trapped in Ukraine.
Recent non -confirmed reports said that the prisoner of war was executed, so that the Australian government would start 'urgent investigations' with Moscow and invoke the Russian ambassador for a statement.
A foreign soldier, who, together with Jenkins, served in the 66th Mechanized Brigade of Ukraine, claimed that the Australian was being tortured and executed to make an example of him for other potential mining.
Foreign Minister Penny Wong is expected to comment later today.
