A man drowned on a popular beach for shocked spectators.
Emergency services were called to St Kilda Pier, in Melbourne at around 8.25 pm on Wednesday after reports from a swimmer in need in the water.
Veugten were seen along the coast and busy promenade when a large -scale search was launched.
A police helicopter continued the ocean from above while boats searched the water for the missing swimmer.
A parking garage nearby was blocked with at least six emergency vehicles.

The lifeless body of the man was eventually pulled out of the water by care providers.
He was unable to breathe new life, despite the best efforts of paramedics.
The man still has to be formally identified
The police do not treat the drowning at this stage as suspicious.
At least 74 people have drowned this summer since December 1, three more than the same time last year.
